Target Today ZERO INCIDENT - Electric Hand Tools
Discussion Topic:
“Portable Hand Tools Procedure”

We can’t work without portable tools, such as grinding, drills, hammers, chippers, or compressed air guns –
they are easy to use, but they are also dangerous enough to possibly hurt or kill you. Let’s check again what we
need to be careful.

Cautions in Use
The tools user shall perform visual check every time before tool is use – for example, every shift and
after every break.
- Is there any visible damage to the outer case of the tool?
- Is electric cable / air hose free from cuts and abrasions?
- Are all guard and safety features in place?
- Was equipment subjected to conditions for which it is not suitable, e.g. it is wet excessively contained?

Portable hand and power tools shall:

- Be operated in safer manner (e.g. never pull tools toward the body, use protective screens / guards and
avoid excessive pressure)
- Ensure the working position is suitable and secure
- Wear necessary PPEs, depending on the risk in different activities (Even if you are not actually
operating, you’ll have to wear if you are standing near the activity.)

1. Electric Hand Tools

The electric supply to powered hand tools must not exceed 220V; center tapped giving 55V to earth.
Where this is not possible, due to the type of tool being used, written APPROVAL shall be sought. Any
tool or equipment exceeding 110V (55V to earth) shall be connected to an earth leakage circuit breaker
(ELCB).
All cables and plug and socket connectors must be maintained in good condition, and cable must be
effectively attached to the plug connectors by efficient cord grips to relieve all strain on the flexible
cable.

2. Hand Tools
NO HOMEMADE HAND TOOLS ARE ALLOWED.

Again, portable hand tools help us to perform tasks. We would be exhausted by manual work if we don’t have
them. But these tools can cause serious injuries when they are not used or maintained properly.
Also, even if we use them properly, using portable tools make other risks at site. Check the conditions and risks
with STARRT Card before you start the work, and wear the appropriate PPEs properly.

Safety Is Utmost Priority – We always have time to do it RIGHT and SAFELY
