Teaching Science VI
I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
a. identify the nine (9) planets of the solar system;
b. value the importance of knowing the different characteristics of planets in the solar system; and
c. give the right answer about the nine (9) planets in the solar system.
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
2. Review
3. Motivation
3.1 (Elicit)
Class, I have here a picture then tell me what
have you observe. Understand?
Yes, teacher.
What have you observed
about this picture, Teddy?
It has many circles, teacher.
Very good! What do we call
an object that rotates around the
sun, Angel?
Planets, teacher.
Excellent! Angel you got the right answer.
3.2 (Engage)
3.3 ( Exploration)
B. Developmental Activities
1. Setting of Standard
3. Discussion
3.1 (Explanation)
Venus…..
The third smallest planet in the solar system
The fourth planet from the Sun.
Mars has two small satellites and its surface
is reddish orange in color.
The third smallest planet in the solar system
he fourth planet from the Sun.
Called the “Red Planet” because it is red
from the iron in the soil.
The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide
(similar to Earth before life evolved).
Has about 1% of the pressure Earth has
Has clouds, but only very thin ones.
Jupiter…..
The largest planet in the solar system.
The fifth in order from the Sun.
5th planet from the sun.
Orbit period is 12 years.
Fastest rotation; once every 9 hours and 50 minutes.
67 moons and at least 4 rings.
High internal temperature due to intense pressure (30,000 C).
Saturn….
The second-largest planet in the solar system.
The sixth planet from the Sun.
It has bright rings made up of orbiting fragments of rock.
Average temperature -176 C.
62 moons and a large, complex ring system.
Rapid rotation, once every 10 hours and 30 minutes.
Bands of colored clouds.
Uranus….
The seventh smallest planet in the solar system
The seventh planet from the Sun.
3rd largest.
Discovered in 1781 (1st planet discovered since ancient times).
Almost 3 billion km from the sun.
27 moons and 13 known rings.
Horizontal rotation, once every 17 hrs.
Orbit period 84 years.
Neptune…
The eighth planet from the Sun in our solar system.
8th planet; 4th largest, but very similar to Uranus in size and mass.
Orbit period 164 years. Rotates once every 16 hours.
Existence predicted before it was discovered, after
astronomers noticed variations in Uranus’ expected orbit.
Position was determined mathematically then
it was discovered there in the mid-1800’s.
Has at least 8 moons.
Ringed planet
Colored blue due to methane.
Very good!
Solar System: Dwarf Planet
Pluto
1960-2006
Found in the Kuiper belt (Oort Cloud)
Scientists declared that Pluto is not a planet from 2007.
It is a dwarf planet?
Pluto , teacher.
In what year did scientist declared that pluto
Is not a planet?
2007, teacher.
Very good! Class.
C. Concluding Activities
1. Generalization
2. Valuing
3.1 (Elaboration)
a. GROUP ACTIVITY
Neptune
Mercury
Uranus
Jupiter
Saturn
Venus
Earth
Pluto
Mars
Questions
B – Individual Activity
Direction: Describe the characteristics in each of the nine (9) planets
