Problems in Screws

Engr. Edwin C. Esperanza

Chairperson, ME Department
A cylinder head of a steam engine is held
on by 14 bolts. The effective diameter of
the cylinder is 35 cm and the steam
pressure is 8.5 kg/cm2. Assuming that the
bolts are not initially stressed, find the
diameter of each of the bolts if the
tensile stress is not to exceed 200
kg/cm2.

a.18.50 mm b. 21.15 mm
c. 19.75 mm d. 19.30 mm
A square threaded power screw has
an efficiency of 65% when raising
the load. The coefficient of friction
for the threads is 0.15, with the
collar friction negligible. Determine
the lead angle of the screw.

a. 17.9⁰ b. 23.5⁰
c. 12.7⁰ d. 27.6⁰
A steam engine cylinder has an effective
diameter of 35 cm and the maximum
steam pressure acing on the cylinder
cover is 12.5 kg/cm2. Calculate the
number of 2-cm diameter required to
fix the cylinder cover. Assume that the
permissible stress in the bolts is 330
kg/cm2.

a. 12 bolts b.10 bolts

c. 13 bolts d. 9 bolts
A 12cm x 16cm air compressor is
operated with a maximum pressure
of 10 kg/cm2. There are 5 bolts with a
yield value of 64 ksi holding the
cylinder head to the compressor.
Determine the tensile stress of the
bolt

a. 26.54 Mpa b. 27.96 Mpa

c. 28.54 Mpa d. 32.56 MPa
Calculate the stress area (in mm2) of
each of the eighteen bolts used to
fasten down the hemispherical joint
of 480 mm pressure vessel having an
internal pressure of 10 MPa, a
material strength of 80 MPa and a
bolt tensile strength of 150 MPa.

a. 775.8 b. 667.5
c. 750.3 d. 670.2
