Quiz no. 1.

Direction: Show your complete solution in a separate sheet of paper.

1. A 2300/230 Volt 60-cycle distribution transformer has 1,200 turns on the high side. If the net
cross sectional area of the iron is 9 square inches, calculate (a) total flux, (b) the maximum flux
density in the core in lines per square inch; (c) the number of secondary turns.

2. A core-type transformer is constructed

with 0.014-inch thick laminations having a
uniform width of 2.75 inch. If the
maximum flux and flux density are,
respectively, 6.2 x 105 Maxwells and 8.2
x 103 Maxwells per square inch and the
air spaces between laminations occupy 8
percent of the stacked core, calculate, the
number of laminations in the transformer.

3. A 25-cycle transformer has 2,250 primary turns and 150 secondary turns if the maximum value
of the mutual flux is 2.64 x 106 Maxwells, calculate, (a) the primary and secondary induced
voltages; (b) the ratio of transformation.

4. Calculate the full load primary and secondary currents of a 5-kVA, 2400/120-volt transformer.

5. The volts per turn of a 50-cycle 13, 800/460 –volt transformer is 6.68. Calculate: (a) the number
of primary and secondary turns; (b) the flux in the core.

6. If the secondary load current of the transformer in prob. No. 5 is 240 amperes, calculate the
primary current.

7. A transformer was tested underload and was found to deliver 62 amperes at 228 volts when
the primary current measured 3.2 amperes, calculate, (a) the primary input voltage, (b) the ratio
of transformation.

8. The no-load and full-load secondary voltages of a transformer were found to be 117 and 113
volts, respectively. Calculate the percent regulation.

9. The percent regulation of a 2,300/230-volt transformer is 2.61 percent. Calculate: (a) the no-
load secondary voltage; (b) the turns ratio.
10. A 100-kVA 2,400/240-volt, 60 cycle transformer has the following constants: R1 = 0.42; X1 =
0.72; R2 = 0.0038; X2 = 0.0068. Calculate the following values in primary and secondary terms;
(a) Re; (b) Xe; (c) Ze
