SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering), Model

Course Name : Turbo machines Duration: 180 Min
Course Code : MEE 2026 Max. Marks : 100

Answer all the questions (10 X 2=20)

1. Classify turbo machines

2. Why reaction stage is more efficient than impulse stage?
3. Contrast velocity compounding and pressure compounding impulse turbines
4. Draw velocity triangles for 50% reaction stage at maximum blade efficiency.
5. What is work done factor?
6. Define surging and stalling in an axial compressors.
7. State the function of an inducer in a centrifugal compressor.
8. Draw velocity triangles for an axial fan with upstream and downstream guide vanes.
9. Draw velocity triangles for radial blade impeller.
10. What is Net positive suction head (NPCH)?

Answer any 5 questions (5 X 16 = 80)

1. A centrifugal fan develops a pressure of 100 mm (W.G). It has an impeller diameter of 100
cm and runs at 1000 rpm. The back ward swept blade air angle at tip is 45° and the width
of the impeller is 10 cm, assuming a constant radial velocity of 10 m/s and density of 1.2
kg/m3, determine the fan efficiency, discharge, and power required, stage reaction and
pressure coefficient.

2. A gas turbine has the following data: P1 = 5 bar, T1= 500 K; Overall turbine efficiency ηT
= 0.90; m (Gas flow rate) = 20 kg/s. Take the velocity of gas at the turbine exit as 75 m/s.
If the gas velocity at the turbine entry is 25 m/s, determine the total-total and total-static
efficiencies when the turbine is exhausting at p2 = 1.2 bar.

3. An axial flow fan with tip diameter of 0.9 m, and hub diameter of 0.7 m discharges 15m3/s
with inlet conditions of p1=110 k Pa, T1 = 30ºC. The flow coefficient is 0.625 and degree
of reaction R=0.60 are obtained at the mean diameter. The guide blades turn the flow back
to the axial direction. Find the mass flow rate, speed of rotation, power required to run the
fan, and blade angles at the mean diameter. (Assume overall efficiency = 75%)
4. The high pressure stage of an axial turbine has the following data : Degree of reaction =
50%; Exit air angle of the fixed blade ring = 15° to the direction of rotation; Turbine inlet
temperature is 860°C and exit temperature 610°C ; Mean blade speed = 350 m/s; Exit axial
velocity = 110 m/s; determine:

(a) Enthalpy drop per stage

(b) Number of stages required for equal work
(c) Inlet and exit air angles for the rotor

5. A Pelton wheel 2.5m diameter operates under following conditions. Net available head=
300m; Speed= 300 rpm; coefficient of velocity of jet= 0.98; Blade friction coefficient=
0.95; Blade angle= 165o; Diameter of Jet= 20cm; Mechanical efficiency= 0.95. Determine:
(a) Power developed (b) Hydraulic efficiency (c) Specific speed.

6. A geometrically similar model to scale 1:6 of a large centrifugal pump is tested. The
prototype parameters are NP = 400 rpm; QP = 1.7 m3/s; HP = 36.5 m; PP = 720 kW. If the
model is tested under a head of 9 m, determine the speed, discharge at which it should be
run and the power required to drive it. Verify the specific speeds.

7. A model of a Kaplan turbine, one tenth actual size is tested under head of 5m when actual
head for prototype turbine is 8.5 m. The power to be developed by prototype is 8000Kw.
When running at 120rpm at an overall efficiency of 85%, determine (a) speed of model (b)
Q of model (c) power of model (d) Specific speed, Ns of both turbines.
