1.0 Projects
During the week, you will be working in teams of around 20 students, with each team
constructing a scale models of one of the four existing structures shown below:
Ravenspurn North is a North Sea gravity gas platform off the Humber estuary. Designed by Ove Arup, it was
built on Teeside at Graythorp for BP. It was the platform that established the viability of concrete gravity
structures and showed a different way forward from the US approach.
Your version will be a concrete caisson 4m square and 1.5m high with a steel scaffold superstructure and
plywood platform. You will build this in a dry dock and then float it to position on the 2m deep lake. You will
need to sink the platform to the “seabed” in order to complete the project.
The Kingsgate Footbridge was designed by Ove Arup in 1967 and is a great example of a ‘simple concept
elegantly expressed’. It connects Durham University and the town centre across a steep gorge and had tight
financial constraint - an economical, simple solution was essential.
Your scaled version of the bridge has an overall span of 10m, and consists of two precast segments
supported on rotating steel frames which rest on concrete piers in the river bed.

The Brewery Wharf footbridge was designed by Ove Arup and partners and constructed in 1992. It was
originally built to connect ‘The Calls’ of Leeds city centre to a new visitors' centre for the Tetley’s
Brewery. Since then the area has had further change attracting both residential and commercial
developments.
Your scale model has a 10m clear span, a two-section precast deck and the cables connect to a 4m high
slanting concrete A-frame.
This 2460m long cable stay-bridge is on the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers in southern
France. It stands some 275m above the Tarn River and consumed 72,000m 3 of concrete, containing 26,200
tonnes of reinforcing steel, and 40,600 tonnes of structural steel.
Your scaled version will have an end span of 5m and middle span of 5m, 2 concrete piers (3.4m high) and 2
steel pylons (3m high) with deck 1.5m wide (plywood). The challenge, apart from scale, will be to launch the
two halves of the deck from each side, on schedule.

Your team will act as the contractor for your project, and your task is to construct your structure
according to the drawings and specifications provided. All your construction activities will be
under the overall supervision of Laing O’Rourke/Expanded (contractor), who will be running
the site and providing all equipment and materials. Waterman (consultants), will also be on
site to check that your structures are being constructed as per the engineers’ requirements
and to provide general advice and assistance. UCL staff will also be present during the week
to ensure projects remain on schedule, provide general guidance and ensure student’s
wellbeing. Any questions regarding any aspect of the fieldcourse should be directed to an
appropriate a member of the onsite supervisory team or if in doubt to a UCL staff member.
The field course is a complex operation, and this is only one of a number of relevant documents,
which also include (among others):
These documents will be made available to you at various stages and will be available on
Moodle prior to the start of the fieldcourse. Make sure to bring copies of these documents in
an external drive for your use and reference during construction week.
You will need to take ownership of the site before any work can start on site. This is
managed through the Constructionarium’s Site Manager. There is a check list of items to be
confirmed are in place before the event can start. This needs to be signed by all parties. At the
end of the week, the checklist will need to be re-evaluated and signed off again, formally
handing the site back to Constructionarium Ltd. Any damages, clean up or missing items will
need to be agreed before leaving site.

On the Sunday we arrive each team will present there tender plans to the Waterman, Laing
O’Rourke and Constructinoarium staff. This should include

Schedule of work
Financial matters
Each evening, teams will contract reviews meetings with Waterman, Laing O’Rourke and
Constructinoarium staff to review the days progress. The “Client” will be seeking information
from the teams with regard to H&S issues, financial matter and progress against the agreed
project programme. It is anticipates that the meeting last about half an hour

Each project team is divided into a number of sub-teams of varying size following the below
schematic. At the end of this document you will find a Project Team Roles template that needs
to be completed electronically and a rota of additional tasks that each group need to complete.
General points
Although you will be allocated a specific role, you should not limit your activities to
these roles during the construction week. For example members of the planning team
should participate in construction activities (steel fixing, concrete pouring etc.) and vice
versa, as circumstances dictate. You should have the chance to experience the full
range of activities available.
Although there are clearly nominated managers within the teams, there will be the
chance for all students to lead, manage and be responsible for the completion of
various subtasks during the course of the week; again we wish to encourage that.

Four members of each team will be trained in the use of hand-held power tools (timber
and metal saws, angle grinders, drills, etc.). They are then the only team members
allowed to use these tools during the week.

They will be available for advice and guidance on construction activities (methods and
techniques), including specialist tasks such as setting out, at no costs to contract.
3.1 Identification
You will be issued with name badges/hard hat and these need to
be worn at all times during the week whilst on the
Constructionarium site. This helps the on-site team to build
rapport with delegates/students and also helps monitor health and
safety practices.
CITB will also issue yellow lanyards which contain the restaurant
meal cards. The lanyards must be worn at all times irrespective if
you are on the Constructionarium site, within the grounds of the
National Construction College or in the restaurant. The yellow
lanyards signify that the delegate is with Constructionarium.
CITB will also issue wrist bands to delegates who have shown
proof of ID so alcohol can be purchased in the bar. No alcohol will
be served to delegates who are not wearing a wrist band.
A major aim of the fieldcourse is, for you, to understand and comply with the health and safety
aspects of design and construction. For the safety of yourself and others on the
Constructionarium site, the site and all its occupants will be subject to the full rigour of the legal
Page 8 of 16
UCL Constructionarium 2019
requirements and good practice relating to health and safety as implemented by Laing
O’Rourke/Expanded on their sites. Some key points to note are:
The Constructionarium site and its occupants will be under the jurisdiction of Laing
O’Rourke/Expanded.
No student will be admitted without having submitted the Student Declaration and Student
Safety Declaration.
In the construction zone safety boots (your own), hard hat, high visibility vest, work
gloves, glasses and name tags must be worn at all times.
No activity can be started unless the corresponding method statement and risk assessment
has been prepared by the project team and signed off by Laing O’Rourke/Expanded.
No student may participate in an activity until they have been briefed by their team leader (or
by the person who produced the method statement and risk analysis) and have signed the
corresponding method statement and risk analysis briefing attendance sheet, to certify they
understand the method and the risks.
No student may be on the site without the presence and agreement of a Laing
O’Rourke/Expanded representative.
No student may use a hand power tool without having received formal training and full safety
gear is required
No student may use a mobile phone, laptops, iPods or similar device in the construction
zones.
No one may enter the Constructionarium site whose judgement is in anyway impaired (e.g.
by illness or incapacity).
All personnel must sign in and sign out whenever entering and leaving the site.
No student may smoke on the Constructionarium site.
No alcohol is to be taken on to the Constructionarium site.
Full length trousers and long sleeve tops must be worn on the Constructionarium site.
Only English is to be spoken on the Constructionarium site.
You are required to bring your own safety footwear which complies with BS EN ISO 20345:
2004, provides support to the ankle, includes mid-sole protection and has a covered protective
toe cap. You strongly advised to wear their boots in before attending this event. Do not forget
to bring suitable socks to wear with their boots.
Please note you, staff and visitors will be asked to leave site if you are not wearing PPE
correctly and at all times.
UCL Constructionarium 2019
Because of the nature of the Constructionarium site and of the individual projects, a number of
risk assessments either have been or will be produced from different perspectives:
It is important to control the use of materials on site; this is the responsibility of the Cost
Manager within each project team. Teams will be required to submit a “Material Requisition
Form” to Laing O’Rourke/Expanded when anything is required from the site store or from
supplies (e.g. concrete). When necessary you should allow time for delivery. The site store
will be open during working hours.
Laing O’Rourke/Expanded have personnel qualified in first aid, they are identified
by a logo (on the right) on their hard hats or vests.

and from the site, no site boots or hi-visibility work wear are permitted in the restaurant. Items
must be removed and stored in the hallway prior to entering the restaurant.
The food choices can appear to be complex, so it is important that delegates/students are
aware of what food choices are permitted.
The restaurant is self-service with a range of hot and cold dishes at each meal. You MUST
swipe your delegate card at the entrance of the restaurant, for all meals. The restaurant
operates on a self-clearing basis, so when you have finished your meal please clear your table
