Assignment 1

1. The document provides instructions for 4 assignments involving slope stability analysis for soils. Assignment 1 involves calculating the safe slope angle and factor of safety for a dry or submerged slope made of soil with given properties. Assignment 2 calculates the factor of safety for a slope using the friction circle method. Assignment 3 uses Taylor's stability number to find the factor of safety for a canal bank slope when full or drawn down. Assignment 4 requires drawing the free body diagram and calculating the factor of safety for a submerged embankment using given soil properties and a Taylor stability number.

ASSIGNMENT 1

1. A granular soil has ø=35°, γsat=19 kN/m3. A slope has to be made of this material. If the
factor of safety of 1.3 is needed against slope failure, find the safe angle of slope when the
slope is dry or submerged without seepage. Also find the factor of safety at a depth of 4m for
the same slope if the seepage occurs parallel to the slope with the water table at the depth of
1.5m from the ground level. Assume angle of slope as 28°.

2. A cut has to be made 12 m deep, inclined at an angle of 35° to horizontal. The possible
circular failure surface has a radius equal to 20.2m, and is passing through the toe of cut slope
and through the point 4m away on the top ground from the edge of cut. The centre of gravity
of the failure mass is at a distance of 9.4m from the center of the failure circle. The properties
of soil are C=30 kN/𝑚2 and ф=15°, γ=20kN/𝑚3 .Find the factor of safety that would be
available on the failure surface by friction circle method.

3. A canal having a side slope of 1 to 1 is proposed to be constructed in a cohesive soil to the

depth of 5m below the ground surface. Soil properties are C=12 kN/𝑚2 , ф=15°, e=1.0,
G=2.65. Using Taylor’s stability number, find the factor of safety with respect to cohesion
against the failure of bank slopes
i) When the canal is full of water
ii) When there is sudden drawdown of water in the canal.

4. Draw the free body diagram of forces for an embankment in C-ф soil with circular failure
surface. Also determine the factor of safety with respect to cohesion for a submerged
embankment 25m high and having a slope of 40°. The properties of soil are ф=10°, C=40
kN/𝑚2 , γsat=19 kN/𝑚3 , Taylor stability number Sn=0.097.
