Plant Test Study Guide

Plants, Flowers, and Seeds Study Guide provides information to prepare for an upcoming test on February 28th. It outlines key topics such as identifying the four main plant parts and their functions, the four types of roots and examples of each, and differences between woody and soft stems. Students should also learn to identify simple, compound, and needle leaves with examples. The plant life cycle and process of photosynthesis are described. Diagrams will help students to label parts of flowers and seeds, and understand monocot and dicot differences. Seed dispersal methods like water, wind, and animals are covered. An essay question asks why plants are important to ecosystems.

Plants, Flowers, and Seeds Study Guide

Test Date: FRIDAY, February 28th

**Detailed information on these topics can be found in the student’s notebook
Label Plant Parts and Describe Function:
*roots - absorb water and nutrients from the soil
*Leaf - where photosynthesis makes food (sugar) for the plant
*stem - carries water and food up and down the plant
*flower - attracts insects to pollinate the plant

Roots: Name the 4 types of roots, describe them, give one example
*Fibrous - fine, hair like roots - might be thousands in one plant (grass)
*Aerial Root - root systems attach to other plants (orchids)
*Taproot - one long, thick root (carrots)
*Prop Root - props the base of the plant up above soil (corn)

Stems: Describe the difference between a woody stem and soft stem.

Leaves: Identify a picture of each type and give an example

*Simple leaf - one leaf, Ex: Maple Tree
*Compound leaf - multiple leaves together Ex: Fern
*Needle - Long, skinny needle-like leaf Ex: Pine Tree

Plant Life Cycle: Know the “Circle of Life” for a plant *diagram in notebook!
Seed - germination - seedling - young plant - mature plant

Photosynthesis: Describe this process, explaining how sun, water, and

oxygen are combined to make food (sugar) for the plant, and explain that
the plant eliminates waste as oxygen

Parts of a Flower - use the diagram to study

Parts of a Seed - use the diagram to study - Know Monocot vs Dicot
Understand how seeds are transferred: water, wind, animals
Essay: Why are plants so important in an ecosystem?
