THESIS
This research paper aims to improve the existing Public Plaza at Poblacion,
Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental to a attract tourist and promote tourism. The public
plaza is facing certain problems nowadays including: Poor Lightning/unsafe, not well
no proper area for parking. With these existing problems, this study conceptualizes a
design that suits for the improvement of public plaza and promote sustainability in
tourism development.
The researchers gathered the data following these methods: first, the
researchers made an interview to the people and to the tourist visited in public plaza and
get their comments and suggestions regarding the present features. Second, the
researchers incorporate the comments and suggestions that serve as an outline for the
improvement of the public plaza. Third, the researchers made an aesthetic conceptual
design of the public plaza following with the three schemes that features: Garden Park,
Fountain Park and Play Park. Then, the researchers made and select 200 individuals
randomly to choose the best scheme for the aesthetic conceptual design of the public
plaza. Results revealed that of the 3 schemes, the majority of the respondents selected
the 1st scheme which consists of fountain and Bermuda grass, improved lighting to
renewed walls, comfort rooms and proper Parking area and basketball court with small
forestation.This serves as final aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement of the
Public Plaza.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A Plaza is an open public area that is usually near city buildings and that has
often trees and places to sit, walk and shop also it is a place where you can
communicate with different people. There are many objects and things that can be

considered in this study. It consists of three parts: Related literature, Related Study, and

Public Plaza is one of the tourist attractions that has unique features that made the
tourist find it interesting and amazing. According to Yuen’s (1995), plaza is any public of
land set aside for aesthetic, educational, recreational or cultural use by the people in a
community. It features landscape that serve of many functions and providers of passive
The design of the plaza or recreation area can have a direct impact to the people’s
perception of safety and their willingness to use a space. Most tourist seek out parks
because I provide contact with the natural and social environment which offer
opportunities for meetings with friends, family bonding, watching and taking pictures on
beautiful views ; all of which help of established a feeling of comport and security.
Hence, well-designed and well-used parks are a great asset for local communities.
Improving plaza often takes a community effort. It takes a good deal of work
assessing, planning, organizing to get the new conceptual design or renovation of plaza
and ensure that it is maintained and managed well. Furthermore, well designed parks and
well restored historic sites at park can add greatly to the pleasant atmosphere of a
community.
Tourism has been constantly gaining around at a global scale where it minimizes
the economic and social well-being of the community. For tourism to work, the
community needs to establish goal that promote the conservation of natural environment,
interconnectedness through the world. It provides people visiting the place of their choice
with the services and boosting the country’s economy. Indeed, tourism has the potential
Tourists are the people who travel in order to visit and witness the beautiful view
and spots in the world. Most of the time, tourist desire to go to place like Boracay,
Chocolate Hills Puerto Princesa Underground River and etc. where attracts them the
most. Most tourists are well educated with sophisticated tastes which have resulted in the
demand for better service and products of the places they visited. Many tourist nowadays
travel with their families, resulting the needs for more family-oriented vacation spots as
Public Plaza is lungs of city offering green space fresh air to people who experience
anything but concrete and exhaust fumes. It can protect open land, extraordinary
landscapes and historic sites. A community with good plaza is a pleasant and sociable
place to live with a lively outdoor and cultural life. Residents spend more time in park;
they contribute to a sense of community. As a result, the people must pay attention for the
improvement of the plaza as it is a right place that attract tourists and create a vibrant
living environment.
In relation to this research by the Citizens Taskforce on the use and security of
park found that there was a direct relationship between the level of park use and the
perception of security: the larger the number of visitor involved in positive activities, the
more likely that anti-social behavior was deterred. The Taskforce linked recreational
initiatives will encourage greater use and ultimately create a safer park environment.
Furthermore, keeping park and recreation facilities safe is a key to community wellness

The above articles in this chapter pinpoint the various aspects regarding public
plaza and its improvement. These problems are analyzed in the following chapter.
The present work will conduct survey to improve the existing public plaza located
at Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental. Through the planning process the general
consensus that came to light for this unique community is that the public plaza system
itself also needs to be unique in nature in order to truly be successful. With that in mind,
the goal for the city of Oroquieta is to create a public plaza system that allows each
neighborhood to have access to some of the same types of basic recreational amenities
and then allow public plaza to include an amenity with a special focus in order to create a
complementary system that will provide a broader range of amenities for the residents,

In this study, the researchers came up with three design schemes for the
conceptual design of a public plaza which used both quantitative and qualitative research
methods. Also, a survey has been conducted to obtain the statistics from 200 respondents
in order to select the best conceptual design among the three schemes. In qualitative
research, the data were obtained from the 200 respondents who selected one from the
three designs for the conceptual design of public plaza. In qualitative research method,
the data were obtained from the comments and suggestions of the respondents on the

were subjected to statistical treatment and analysis. Conclusions are drawn in the light of
summary of findings and conclusion follows the same organization of the problem in the
first chapter. These are the interpreted after the appropriate statistical treatment was
applied. Findings are disclosed so as to come up with correct conclusion and suggest
appropriate recommendations.
5.1 Summary
The main problem of the study is to improve the existing Plaza in Poblacion,
The research group went to the existing unimproved public plaza in Oroquieta
City, Misamis Occidental to conduct interviews in relation with the research study. After
gathering data, we had developed three schemes of conceptual design for the
Based upon a number of design criteria, 200 randomly selected respondents were
requested to be part of a survey wherein each one was asked to choose the best scheme
they think is the most appropriate conceptual design for the improvement of public Plaza.
The instrument used was a survey questionnaire checklist to gather the needed
data based on the design criteria to determine the best appropriate design. The draft of the
questionnaire was drawn out based on the researcher’s reading, previous studies,
published related studies. A questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument
for this study. It includes four design criteria for the respondent to choose from.
5.2 Findings
Scheme 1: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. the
aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.725;
landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.495;
Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.805. Thus the
total weighted mean on the 1st scheme is 4.650, which is rated as excellent by the
respondents.
Scheme 2: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. The
aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.600;
landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.540;
Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.715. Thus the
total weighted mean on the 2nd scheme is 4.639, which is rated as excellent by the
respondents.
Scheme 3: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. The
aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.550;
landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.460;
Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.350. Thus the
total weighted mean on the 3rd scheme is 4.459, which is rated as excellent by the
respondents.
5.3 Conclusions
Based on the result findings, the 1st scheme is chosen as the best and appropriate
conceptual design for the improvement of public plaza in Oroquieta City and the above
results shows the data. It was determined by the highest rating of the 1st scheme given the
design criteria.
