Literacy Block Lesson Plan

Miss Lopuszynski's 1st grade literacy block lesson plan involves reading the picture book "Go to Sleep, Groundhog!" and having students complete a graphic organizer to plan their own groundhog adventure stories. The 75 minute lesson includes two whole group mini lessons, two small group guided reading rotations where the teacher listens to students read and provides feedback, and a closure where students are reminded they will write their adventure stories later in the week using the graphic organizers. The lesson ties into various reading, writing, and language standards and aims for students to organize their story ideas into a graphic organizer.

Instructional Objective:
SWBAT organize ideas into a graphic organizer for their own adventure story.

Active Instructional Plan:

 1st mini lesson - We read. Introduction to the Groundhog Adventure
Briefly remind students of the most recent holiday (Groundhog’s Day) and how that works.
o Read aloud: Go to Sleep, Groundhog! picture book by Judy Cox (asking comprehension
questions throughout).
 1st rotation:
o Students will be dismissed for their first rotation based off of the daily 5 board choices they
made in the morning.
o I will be working with a small guided reading group during this rotation while the other
students will be independently working at their first-choice stations.
o Guided reading groups begin with a picture walk (unless the group is working on a chapter
book), a read to self, then reading to self-using the whisper phones. While students are reading
with whisper phones, I will listen in to each individual students’ reading- focusing mostly on
accuracy and fluency the first time around- and take note of how it goes.
o Once I have listened in on each individual student, we will discuss the story as a whole group,
and I will base the following instruction/activity off of struggle areas or tricky words that
surfaced while I was listening in. This segment will vary group to group depending on what
arises during the session.
 2nd mini lesson-We write/ I write. Complete a graphic organizer to brainstorm story ideas
o I will briefly explain that they will eventually (later in the week) be writing their very own
Groundhog adventure books.
Miss Lopuszynski’s Lesson Plan

oGraphic organizers will be distributed. They will come up with a name for their groundhog,
and then together we will brainstorm some ideas for where their adventures are going to take
place
o Lastly, students will circle if their groundhog saw or didn’t see its shadow
o This organizer will be filed away into their red literacy folders for later that week.
 2 rotation:
nd

o Students will be dismissed for their second rotation based off of the daily 5 board choices they
made in the morning.
o I will be working with a small guided reading group during this rotation while the other
students will be independently working at their second-choice stations.
 Closure/Cleanup:
o I will direct students to clean up their rotation supplies, head back to their tables and get ready
for lunch routines. Before they leave, I will remind them that we will be creating and
completing our very own adventure book later in the week using the wonderful ideas they
came up with during whole group writing time.
Assessment/Evaluation:
- informal assessment throughout
- graphic organizer
- behavior during rotations
