DataShed-MapInfo ODBC Links

The following notes describe the steps necessary to connect MapInfo with tables from a
SQL or Access database, make them mappable and display as points in a MapInfo table.
The MapInfo table can be refreshed from the database without the need to re-create points
from easting and northing coordinates.

The DBMS option must be installed on your version of MapInfo to complete the process.
If the option is greyed out in the File/Open DBMS Connection menu you will need to
install from the MapInfo Installation CD.

Downhole data tables, such as lithology, do not need to be made mappable and can be
opened and refreshed from the DBMS menu.

Users require the correct SQL permissions to be able to connect to views in the SQL
database using ODBC links. A User Profile needs to be created with Select permissions
for the views you wish to open e.g. VW_MI_DHCollar.

1.0 Load Map Catalog Utility

This tool creates a Map Catalog table (MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG) in your SQL

database to register MapInfo tables that have been made mappable.

Open the Map Catalog tool from the Tools menu.

Tools
Tool Manager
DBMS Catalog
Check Loaded and Autoload options and click OK
2.0 Create Map Catalog

Open the DBMS Catalog Utility and create MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG table using the
System DSN to your SQL Server database.

Tools
DBMS Catalog
Create Catalog

Select Data Source (e.g. Tanzania)

A table named MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG should now be present in you SQL database.

3.0 Make Table Mappable

This option creates a record in the MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG table and allows you to
plot your data points using the preferred easting and northing fields from your data table.

From the DBMS menu

Select Make DBMS Table Mappable
Select Machine Data Source (e.g. Tanzania)

Change the drop down Owner type to dbo and select the view you want to make mappable
(views that have already been made mappable will not appear in the list).
Select Index Type: XY Coordinates and your preferred easting and northing fields
Uncheck the Per Row Style box unless you want to define this option
Set the Symbol Style

Set the table Projection

OK the following two error messages and cancel the file open window (this is a bug in
MapInfo and the table has been mapped).

4.0 Open a DBMS Table

Open a DBMS Table from the DBMS menu.

Change the drop down Owner Type to dbo and select the view you want to open
Accept the default options and browse to the folder you want to save the MapInfo table
Click OK
The table will open in a new mapper window

5.0 Refresh a DBMS Table

This option allows you to refresh the data in the mapped table directly from the SQL
database without the need to re-create points. The refresh can be carried out on DBMS
table while the connection to the database is open or on a table created when previously
linked to a DBMS table during a different session. The Refresh option automatically re-
opens a connection to the SQL database table.

Open the table from the File Open Menu

Select Refresh DBMS Table from the DBMS menu
6.0 Change the Map Symbol for DBMS Table

The map symbol of a DBMS table can be changed after the table has been created.

Select Change the Symbol for a Mappable DBMS Table from the DBMS menu

Change the Owner Type to dbo and select the required table
Open
Edit Symbol Style and click OK
