112 Section 3 Geometry LIST 95 TYPES OF POLYGONS Polygons are closed, plane figures bounded by line segments. The following list contains useful information about these figures. n stands for the number of sides. While some terms and formulas apply to all polygons, others apply only to regular polygons. Terms Center of a regular polygon —the common center of the inscribed and circumscribed circles. O is the center. Radius of a regular polygon —the line segment which forms the center of the polygon to any vertex. OA is a radius. Central angle of a regular polygon—an angle included between two radii drawn ‘to successive vertices. AOB is a central angle. Apothem of a regular polygon—a line segment from the center of the polygon that is perpendicular to one of its sides. OC is an apothem. Diagonal of any polygon—a line segment drawn from one vertex to an another nonadjacent vertex. DE is a diagonal. Formulas 1. The measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon is ~ n is the number of sides. 2, The measure of each exterior angle of a regular polygon is “ where n is the number of sides. 3. The measure of each central angle of a regular polygon is “" where n is the number of sides. 4, The sum of the interior angles of any polygon equals (n — 2) (180°) where n is the number of sides, 5. The sum of the exterior angles of any polygon is 360°. 6. The number of diagonals of any polygon is *;"" where n is the number of sides. 14 Section 3 Geometry LIST 97 PRINCIPLES OF REGULAR POLYGONS Regular polygons share some unique characteristics, as the list below shows. * A circle may be circumscribed about any regular polygon. * A circle may be inscribed in any regular polygon. * An equilateral polygon inscribed in a circle is a regular polygon. * The radius of a regular polygon is a radius of the cireumscribed circle. + The radius of a regular polygon bisects the angle to which it is drawn, * Apothems of regular polygons are equal. + An apothem of a regular polygon bisects the side to which it is drawn. ‘* Regular polygons that have the same number of sides are similar, * Corresponding lines of regular polygons that have the same number of sides are in proportion. ‘The Math Teacher's Book of Lists, © 1995 by Prentice Hal
