PROBLEM
The existing valves can be bent or damaged on certain Caterpillar
Products with a C9.3 Engine, and C9.3 Generator Sets, Industrial
Engines, and Marine Engines due to a misaligned test bench at the
assembly facility. If the existing valves fail it will allow the valves
to drop and cause damage to the heads and cylinder packs.

ACTION REQUIRED
It is recommended all Affected Product listed in this letter with less
than 250 hours be inspected as soon as possible using the attached
procedure and a gauge tool to be provided by Caterpillar. To acquire
the correct gauge tool contact the North American DSN Engine Tier 2
with your shipping address. Although the gauge appears simple the
tolerances held are within 50 micron and should not be attempted to be
duplicated in the field.
Note: The inspection tool should not require force to seat it over the
valves.
Upon finding damage document each cylinder with a photo that contains
identification of the cylinder number and the issue found. Create a
PSCRM Product Health Service Request (SR), mention this publication in
the description along with the issue, Attach the photos / measurements
to the SR prior to submitting to Caterpillar. If damage is confirmed by
the Product Group analyst then replacement of all the valves and guides
in the head will be required.
When pin timing the engine use only the right side (as facing the
flywheel) timing pin location on the housing for pin timing during
repair.

PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty
parts handling.
Rework Procedure
Remove the valve cover, injector harness, and valve mechanism per
instructions in SIS.
Note: The injectors do not have to be removed for this procedure.
Mark and remove valve bridges such that they can be re-installed at same
locations.
Place the M7X-2941 gauge over all 4 valve stems of the cylinder being
checked (See figure 1).
The “UP” and “DOWN” markings on the gauge along with the cutouts for the
injector connector/hold down bolt and the head bosses (if equipped)
should be a guide for proper positioning.
The cylinder passes the gauge test if the gauge can be placed over all 4
valve stems at once.
If the gauge will not sit on the 4 stems together, the cylinder head
should be removed and all valves and guides for the offending cylinder
head should be replaced.
When all 6 cylinders are checked and repaired (if required), re-install
the bridges, valve mechanism, injector harness, and valve cover per SIS
instructions.
Note: Bridges should be re-installed in original locations.
Note: Special care should be taken to insure pushrods are positioned
correctly after valve mechanism is installed.
Note: Valve lash should be set after valve mechanism installation.
