Assignment 2

1. The document contains information about calculating the capacitance of single and three phase transmission lines given their conductor configurations and dimensions. 2. It provides figures and asks calculation questions related to determining capacitance per km, phase spacing, and geometric mean radius values for different transmission line setups. 3. The questions involve using concepts like geometric mean distance and radius to solve for unknown transmission line parameters from the given conductor and spacing information.

Assignment: 2

1. One circuit of a single phase transmission line is composed of three solid 0.5 cm radius wires. The return circuit is
composed of two solid 2.5 cm radius wires. The arrangement of conductors is as sown in figure (a) Applying the concept of
the GMD and GMR find the capacitance of the complete line in microfarad per kilometre.

2. A three phase, 60Hz transposed transmission line has a flat horizontal configuration as shown in fig (b). The line capacitive
reactance is 0.486 ohm per kilometre .The conductor geometric mean radius is 2.0cm .Determine the phase spacing D in
meters.

Fig (b)

3. A three phase transposed line is composed of one ACSR 159000-cmil ,54/19 lapwing conductor per phase with flat
horizontal spacing of 8m as shown in fig (c). The GMR of each conductor is 1.515cm.
(a) Determine the capacitance per phase per kilometre of the line.
(b) This line is to be replaced by a two conductor bundle with 8m spacing measured from the centre of the bundles
as shown in fig (d) .The spacing between the conductors in the bundle is 40 cm. If the line capacitance per
phase is to be 77 percent of the capacitance in part (a), what would be the GMR of each new conductor in the
bundle?
