Amusing Adaptations

This lesson plan outlines an activity where students will learn about animal adaptations by creating imaginary animals with random adaptations and environments. Students will roll dice to get a random adaptation and animal, then draw and write a paragraph explaining how their creature survives using its traits. The objectives are for students to understand how adaptations help animals survive and demonstrate their creative abilities. The lesson supports science standards on identifying advantageous physical characteristics and illustrating scientific concepts through models.

AMUSING ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

Subject: Science

Time: 30-45 minutes

Objectives:
 Students will identify characteristics that an animal has in order to survive
 Students will analyze how adaptations of a species can survive.
 Students will demonstrate their abilities to create animal with the chosen adaptation and
explain why they illustrated what they did.
 Students will write a paragraph about how their animal will interact in their environment.

GLCES:
L.EV.04.22: Identify how variations in physical characteristics of individual organisms give them
the advantage for survival and reproduction.
S.RS.04.11: Demonstrate scientific concepts through various illustrations, performances,
models, exhibits, and activities.

Materials:
 Dice, paper, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers
 White board

Introduction/Anticipatory set:
The class and I will discuss and review animal adaptations. I will have the class to give me examples of
species that have adapted to survive.

Body of Lesson:
 I will make a 2 column chart on the white board. One column will be labeled ADAPTATION and
the other will be labeled ANIMAL.
 The class will give me six outrageous adaptations that an animal may have which I will write on
the board, labeled 1-6.
o Ex. Blue polka dots, two tails, four eyes, pink scales
 I will ask class to give me 6 real names of animals which I will write on the board, again labeled
1-6.
 The class will then roll a die and record their number. They will do this twice.
 Then I will tell them which column goes with each dice roll.
 They will then label their animal (2 tongued bear) on a sheet of paper and then they will draw
their animal using supplies.
 After they have finished with the drawing they will write a paragraph to explain how there
animal would survive using their adaptations.

Group practice:
Students will work independently on their sketch and paragraph. They will have an opportunity to share
with the rest of the class when they are finished.

Assessment:
Student will hand in drawing and paragraph which explains how animal will interact in their
environment. They will be assessed on whether their paragraph gives viable reasons on the survival of
the species from which they have learned about adaptations prior to this lesson.

Closure:
Adaptations have occurred over millions of years and will continue so animals can adapt to their ever
changing environment.
