Chicktionary

A  free  mobile  app  that  provides  word  puzzles  and  word  play.

This  app  fits  nicely  into  Literacy  By  3  as  a  part  of  phonics/word  work  during  literacy  station
time.

What  is  looks  like

Chicktionary  is  a  variation  of  the  word  games  Word  Twist  and  Anagrams.  At  the  top  part  of  the
game,  there  is  an  egg  rack.  The  egg  rack  has  several  rows  of  three-‐  to  seven-‐letter  words
represented  by  eggs.  The  eggs  are  initially  blank,  but  every  time  you  form  a  valid  word,  it  is
revealed  in  the  corresponding  egg  row.  So  for  example,  you  are  able  to  form  the  word  “lie,”
then  it  will  appear  in  one  of  the  three-‐letter  word  egg  rows.  The  number  of  rows  per  two-‐,
three-‐,  four-‐,  five-‐,  six-‐,  and  seven-‐letter  words  corresponds  to  the  number  of  words  you  can
create  per  group  from  the  letters  below  the  egg  rack.
!
Forming  words
Below  the  egg  rack  are  seven  chickens.  The  seven  chickens  have  a  letter  on  each  of  them.
There  are  one  or  two  major  words  that  can  use  up  all  the  letters  and  you  are  given  bonus  points
when  you  are  able  to  get  it  or  them.
There  are  two  options  you  can  use  to  form  words.  One  is  by  tapping  or  clicking  a  chicken  and
then  submitting  it.  The  other  is  to  type  the  letters  into  the  words  you  want  to  form  and
pressing  enter.
         1.              Tap  a  chicken  to  drop  its  letter  into  the  lower  bin.
         2.              When  you  have  created  a  valid  word,  the  green  enter  button  will  appear.
         3.              Tap  the  button  to  submit  your  word.  That's  it!

For  gameplay  reasons,  Chicktionary  does  not  accept  words  with  less  than  three  (3)  letters.
One  (1)  and  two  (2)  letter  words  are  not  considered  in  either  game  mode.

Arranging  your  chickens
!
You  may  also  re-‐arrange  your  chickens  by  dragging  them.

To  drag  a  chicken,  touch  and  hold  its  belly,  then
move  your  finger  across  the  screen.
Release  your  finger  to  settle  the  chicken  in  its  new
position!
!
Scrambler  and  Trix
Don’t  know  what  word  to  form?  You  can  shuffle
the  letters  by  clicking  the  scrambler  button  or  if
you’re  using  a  tablet,  just  shake  it.  You  can  also
drag  the  chickens  into  different  positions  to  have
a  different  perspective  and  hopefully  get  to  form
more  words.
The  game  also  has  two  ways  you  can  get  hints.  These  are  Free  Bird  and  Beak  Sneak.  With  Free
Bird,  you  are  given  one  entire  word  for  free.  With  Beak  Sneak,  one  letter  in  each  word  is  shown.
You  can  use  them  whenever  you  seem  to  have  difficulty  in  forming  words.
!
Scoring
The  points  you  get  will  depend  on  the  length  of  the  words  you  form.  Three-‐letter  words  are
worth  a  hundred  points  each,  four-‐letter  words  will  give  you  200  points,  five-‐letter  words  get
you  400  points  apiece,  six-‐letter  words  are  worth  800  points,  and  you  earn  a  whopping  1,  600
points  for  every  seven-‐letter  word.  You  get  an  extra  10,  000  points  if  you  get  to  form  all  the
words!
In  addition,  before  every  round,  you  are  asked  to  make  a  bet  as  to  how  many  words  you  think
you  can  form.  You  are  given  three  options  for  every  wager  and  each  one  has  corresponding
bonus  points.Aside  from  getting  bonus  points,  you  need  to  reach  the  number  of  words  you  bet
in  order  to  move  on  to  the  next  round.  As  you  progress,  the  number  of  words  you  can  bet  on
increases.  Also,  if  you  fail  to  reach  the  number  of  words  you  bet,  the  game  will  end.
!
The  blue  ribbon  on  the  main  menu

The  blue  ribbon  icon  shows  your  current  rank.
Every  Chicktionary  player  starts  at  rank  1,  but  as
you  play,  your  rank  will  increase.
Right  now,  the  maximum  possible  rank  is  30,  but
we'll  be  increasing  the  maximum  number  very
soon.

!
!
!
How  do  I  increase  my  rank?
Whenever  you  find  a  word,  you'll  get  points.
Accumulating  enough  points  will  increase  your  rank,  which  will  give  you  more  options  within
the  game,  such  as  access  to  Quick  Play  and  special  chickens.

!
I  want  to  rank  up  fast!  How  can  I  do  that?
Create  long  words!  Long  words  are  worth  far
more  points  than  short  words.
Also,  experiment  with  different  special  chickens  in
Journey  and  Quick  Play.  Mixing  and  matching  the
right  combinations  can  really  help  you  rack  up
those  points!
!

!
Game  modes
Chicktionary  has  two  game  modes:  timed  and  untimed.  The  timed  version  allows  you  to  form
words  within  120  seconds  per  round,  which  is  definitely  challenging.  If  you  don’t  want  to  feel
any  pressure,  you  can  go  for  the  untimed  mode.
!
Classic
!
Classic  is  an  update  to  the  famous  Long  Play
mode  from  the  original  version  of  Chicktionary.  If
you're  an  experienced  wordsmith  who's  ready  for
a  challenge,  take  a  crack  at  Classic!

!
!
It's  not  as  easy  as  it  looks:  to  complete  a
single  Classic  puzzle,  you'll  need  to  find  a
very  large  number  of  words  from  a  single
combination  of  letters.  The  letter
combinations  and  the  difficulty  are
randomized,  so  it's  a  different  experience
each  time  you  play.
!
Classic  has  no  time  limits,  which  is  a  good  thing,  as  you'll  rarely  finish  one  puzzle  in  a  single
sitting.  To  save  your  game  in  Classic,  click  the  Menu  button  in  the  upper-‐left-‐hand  corner.
!
If  you've  played  any  of  the  old  versions  of  Chicktionary,  you'll  recognize  two  other  features  that
will  make  Classic  even  more  challenging:  there  are  no  Special  Chickens  helping  out  in  this
mode,  and  Bonus  Words  won't  give  you  any  Hint  Letters.  However,  in  case  you  get  really  stuck,
the  Hint  button  is  still  available  to  help  out.
!
!

What  is  Quick  Play?
!
Quick  play  is  a  fast-‐paced  game  mode  where  you  race  against  the  clock  to  find
as  many  words  as  possible!

!
The  basic  rules  are  similar  to  Journey:  longer
words  are  worth  more  points,  and  each  word  may
only  be  entered  once.
Also,  like  in  Journey,  each  time  you  play
Quickplay  you'll  be  given  a  randomized  set  of
letters.
However,  no  matter  how  many  words  you  find,
the  game  ends  when  the  clock  hits  zero!
!
!
!
!
The  Streak  Meter
!
Each  word  you  find  in  Quick  Play  increases  your  streak,  which  is  represented  by  a  row  of  eggs
at  the  top  of  the  screen.
One  egg  is  claimed  for  each  word  you  create.
!

One  more  word  and  you'll  earn  a  gold  egg!  Four  more  will  increase  your  multiplier.
!
Every  time  you  complete  a  streak,  two  things  happen:
         ▪                Your  point  multiplier  increases
         ▪                The  streak  meter  is  reset
As  you  continue  to  play,  more  words  are  required  to  complete  your  streaks.  In  turn,  the
rewards  you  claim  for  completion  increase  dramatically.

What's  the  point  multiplier  do?
!
The  point  multiplier  increases  the  value  of  every  word  you  find.  For  instance,  if  your  point
multiplier  is  3,  every  word  will  be  worth  triple  points!
!
!
How  do  I  know  how  well  I'm  doing?
!
Check  the  white  numbers  in  the  right-‐hand  corner  of  the  egg  tray.
They  track  the  percentage  of  possible  words  you've  found  so  far.

Is  it  possible  to  beat  Quick  Play?
!
Yes,  although  it  requires  a  quick  memory  and  fast  fingers.
There  are  several  special  chickens  who  can  help  you  out  by  adding  extra  seconds  to  the  clock.
Bring  more  than  one  along  to  maximize  your  time!
!
Chicktionary  Coop
The  newer  version  of  Chicktionary  is  Chicktionary  Coop.  Players  can  earn  golden  eggs  as  the
game’s  currency  and  use  them  to  buy  virtual  stuff  like  clothes  for  the  seven  chickens,  making
the  game  more  fun  and  colorful.  It  has  the  same  rules  and  gameplay.
