The Distance Delta Module One

Unit One Exam Practice Task

This task has been taken from the June 2006 DELTA exam paper and reflects part of Paper
One Task Four in the Module One exam. The Unit One task acts as an orientation to the
language analysis sections of this exam task and to give an indication of the depth of
analysis required for Delta. You will receive training on how to approach all exam tasks in
the Exam Training on the website.

Please note that the Unit One task will not be marked by a Course Tutor – the Guideline
Answers will be posted on the website for you to mark your own work. Experience has
shown that reading through the guideline answers and using these to mark your own work
helps Course Participants understand what is expected of them in the task and how to
maximise their marks. From Unit Two until the end of the course you will be getting detailed,
personalised feedback from your Course Tutor.

Look at the following extracts from the text below (a human interest story taken from a
newspaper). All the sentences contain examples in bold of the present perfect simple.

1. In that time, the self-styled Running Man has made it across the Himalayas. (line 21)

2. Until now the record for the longest distance ever run has been held by an
American. (line 42)

3. During the last 65 months he has run anything from 25 to 125 miles in a day. (line
61)

4. So this is the first time I’ve ever achieved something.’ (line 68)

(i) Comment on the form and meaning/use of the present perfect in each extract

(ii) What problems of form and pronunciation might learners at Intermediate (B2) level
have with these examples of the present perfect in bold?

To help you with the task, look at the following tips:

 ‘Comment on’ means ‘analyse’.

 Refer only to the examples given above in your answer, and not the present perfect
simple in general.

 When considering learner problems, consider both production (saying/writing the

phrases) and reception (understanding the phrases).

 Aim to make as many possible points as you can, even though some of them may
seem very obvious. For example, ‘made’ is the past participle of an irregular verb.
