How to Install WebSpace 4.8/5.0 or 6.

0 to Function Properly with iFIX

Prior to the installation the following will be necessary:

• WebSpace Installation media (DVD/ISO)

• iFIX Installation media (DVD/ISO)
• Operating System installation disk (necessary for the Microsoft Internet Information Services
components).
• A valid WebSpace License
• A valid iFIX License

Note: The following steps must be done in the order in which they are listed. Skipping any steps may
cause WebSpace to fail to install properly on the system.

Installation Outline
The minimal steps that will be necessary to Install WebSpace with iFIX are as follows:

A. Install IFIX
B. Reboot
C. Install the latest IFIX SIMS
D. Reboot
E. Install Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
F. Reboot
G. Install Proficy WebSpace
H. Reboot
I. Verify WebSpace Install
J. Validate client connection

A. Installation of IFIX
Before WebSpace itself can be installed, IFIX must be first installed on the system in question. It is
possible to install and run a project on a IFIX Server that is also running WebSpace, but it is not
recommended. Ideally, it is suggested to install IFIX (as a Server) on the WebSpace system, but to use it
more as a IFIX Viewer, and run the project remotely on another physical node. To install the software,
use the installation media for IFIX and ensure to install it while running as a Local Administrator account.
When given the option on the installation splash screen, choose to install as a IFIX Server. When the
installation process finishes then reboot the system to complete the installation.

1. Launch the InstallFrontEnd.exe from the HMI/SCADA - IFIX DVD/ISO

2. On the Front End choose to install “IFIX Server”
3. Go through the installation and let it complete

Allow iFIX and the WebSpace Server through the firewall, if the Windows firewall is enabled. Click Yes to
continue. The install will automatically configure the rest of these settings for you. If you are using a
different firewall, you will need to manually open the firewall for your iFIX WebSpace components.
Port Usage - When you install the iFIX WebSpace, and the firewall is enabled, the install automatically
prompts you to add the iFIX WebSpace to your exception list. The following port numbers are used by
the iFIX WebSpace:

Port 491 is the port on which the “iFIX WebSpace Server Application Publishing Service” listens on (for
both TCP and SSL).

Update the HOSTS file with the IP address and name of the iFIX SCADA Server, to ensure the highest
reliability for connectivity. You can find the HOSTS file in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc folder.

If the iFIX SCADA Server node name is different from the computer name that it was installed on, you
also need to add this name to the HOSTS file. The HOSTS file on the iFIX WebSpace Server should be
identical to the one on the iFIX SCADA Server

In the iFIX System Configuration (SCU) tool:

• Open the WEB.SCU file.

• Verify that Network Configuration is set to TCP/IP (Configure > Network), that SCADA is disabled
(Configure > SCADA), and that Workspace.exe appears in your tasks list (Configure > Tasks). By
default, these settings are automatically configured during install. If these settings are not
correct, update them now.
• Specify the name of your iFIX SCADA Server in the Remote Nodes list (Configure > Network).

Either copy your pictures from the SCADA Server to the PIC folder on the Dependent Application Server
(recommended for optimum performance), or map a drive to your PIC folder on your SCADA Server.

B. Reboot the system when complete

C. Installation of Latest IFIX SIMs

After the installation of IFIX is complete, it is necessary to install the latest IFIX SIM. After the
installation of IFIX, it is recommended to install the latest IFIX WORKSPACE GENERAL SIM. To do this,
please download it from the GE website and run the installer. Again, make sure that the installation is
run as a Local System Administrator account.

1. Download the latest SIM from the GE Support site

2. Install the SIM

D. Reboot when complete

E. Installation of Microsoft Internet Information Server/Components

Before WebSpace can be installed on the host system, it is necessary to install Microsoft IIS with the
necessary components. The following steps outline the installation of these components and IIS:

1. Windows Server 2012/2016 Installation

When Microsoft Internet Information Server is installed on a Windows Server 2012/2016 system, it is
necessary to use the Sever Manager, and to run the Add Roles or Features Wizard. Here are the

b. When it opens, click on the “Add Roles and features” link
c. The Add Roles and Features Wizard will appear
d. Click the “Next” button
e. On the “Select Installation Type” dialog, choose “Role based or feature based installation”,
and click the “Next” button.
f. On the “Select Destination Server” dialog, choose the local server from the Server Pool
Computer and click on the “Next” button.

the required components.

Note: It may prompt you for the Operating System media when doing this, so it is
recommended to have that available if needed.
F. After installation of the required options, reboot the computer

G. Installation of Proficy WebSpace

The next step is to install Proficy WebSpace on the computer. Launch the Proficy WebSpace installer and
choose to install the WebSpace server on the system. Make sure that the installer is run by a Local
System Administrator on the computer.

1. Launch the InstallFrontEnd.exe from the WebSpace installation DVD/ISO

2. From the menu choose to install Proficy WebSpace
3. Accept the license agreement when prompted
4. It is suggested to use the default installation location if possible, but this can be modified as
needed.
5. When prompted for a Logon, please leave the user name and password fields blank. This will set
the “ProficyWebSpaceAppPool” application pool in IIS to run under the provided
account/identity.
6. Let the installation finish

H. Reboot when complete

I. Verify WebSpace is Registered Properly

When WebSpace is properly installed on the system, then it inserts a new website into the Microsoft IIS
configuration called “ProficyWebSpace”. To confirm if this is set up properly please do the following.

1. Open Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager (INETMGR)

2. On the left-hand pane of the IIS Manager, navigate to “COMPUTERNAME->Sites->Default Web
Site”.
3. Underneath the default website should be another site called “ProficyWebSpace”. If this is
visible, then the Proficy WebSpace installation has occurred properly and it is available to be
used.
4. It is advisable to confirm that the Proficy WebSpace Server service is running. This can be done
via the Windows Start menu by going to “Proficy WebSpace->Start Proficy WebSpace Server”.
5. It is a good idea to also open the Proficy WebSpace administrator and confirm it is able to
connect to the running WebSpace instance. This can be done via the Start menu in the “Proficy
WebSpace->Tools->Proficy WebSpace Administrator”.

J. Validate Client Connection

These are the four methods to connect to WebSpace machine:

1. Web browser
2. Windows Desktop Client
3. iPad
4. Android device
1. Using a Web browser

The iFIX WebSpace ActiveX control is automatically installed the first time a user accesses the iFIX
WebSpace HTML page. To run the client, all you need to do is access the iFIX WebSpace Server
HTML page.

NOTE: If you want to change the options available when you run the iFIX WebSpace Embedded
ActiveX control, refer to the Command-line Options section below. To run the iFIX WebSpace
ActiveX control:

a. Start Internet Explorer.

b. In the URL box, type http:// followed by the iFIX WebSpace Server computer name (or IP
address) then /ProficyWebSpace and then iFIX.html.

For example:
http://iFIXWebSpaceServerName (or Ip address)/ProficyWebspace/iFIX.html

An installation message box appears the first time you log on to this page.

c. Click Install. Trust the digitally signed ActiveX control.

d. When the Logon dialog appears, type the following information:

• Save the page.

2. Using the Windows Desktop Client

You can install the desktop client with the ifix-client.windows.exe installer provided on the iFIX
WebSpace Server computer in the folder where you publish the iFIX WebSpace files to be hosted by
your IIS or Apache server, or from the iFIX WebSpace install folder, which is the C:\Program
