I. Title: Reading Para sa Mga Tsikiting 2.0; Helping Teachers Improve

VI. Rationale
The Philippine Normal University-Mindanao is consistently uniting students for
one goal, having one vision of continuously serving for the interests, welfare and
democratic rights of every student. Part of the realization of its vision, mission, goals
and objectives, a functional and sustainable extension program has to be implemented
by the PNU-Mindanao in coordination with the administration.
The PNU-Mindanao supports the vision by spearheading activities that can help
further students’ knowledge on student leadership. The Reading Para sa Mga Tsikiting
2.0; Helping Teachers Improve Pupils’ Reading Performance is one of the extension
programs of the DLL to help the pupils of Awa Elementary School learn basic reading
needs and support the teachers in developing essential reading materials and strategies.

VII. Goals/Objectives:
1. Promote reading and understand the basic reading needs of Awa
Elementary School pupils.
2. Support the school with a focus on reducing the illiteracy rate of
Awa Elementary School.

VIII. Resources
Financial resources were taken from the budget allocated by the Multicultural
Education, Linkages and Extension Services amounting to Php .
Human resources were the PNU Mindanao Bachelor in English Education students.

X. Activities Conducted before the Program:
During the succeeding days, the Bachelor in English Education prepared the
instructional materials, programs, identified the participants of Awa Elementary
School with reading difficulties, the video presentations and other multimedia,
and the attendance sheets. Communication letters were sent to the schools a week
before the event.

XI. Activities Conducted during the Program:


The BEE-II students were grouped into two, group one was assigned to teach
the pupils with reading difficulties, spearheaded by Ms. Victoria Cheska Batistis. A
one-on-one reading session is conducted by the participants. Group two was assigned
to teach pupils from Grades 1 to 6 spearheaded by Ms. Mary Claire T. Bestudi in their
respective classrooms.
At 7:30 o’clock in the morning, the BEE-II students together with Dr.
Concepcion G. Belza went to Awa Elementary School. The BEE-II students were then
assigned to their respective tutees and classroom designation and started their
reading activity to the pupils. The one-one-one tutoring was conducted at Awa
Elementary School.
During the tutoring session, BEE-II students worked hard in helping the
students improve their reading skills. Also, during the sessions, the tutors conducted
writing activities for it is a part of the scope in teaching the young children. The real
challenge of teaching is on how to deal with the short attention span of each pupil
when children are naturally short in attention span. Despite all these, the BEE-II
students were able to surpass these challenges and came up with different teaching
strategies to cope with the attention of the pupils.
Meanwhile, while the BEE-II students are teaching the young children of Awa
Elementary School, the teachers also had their lecture and workshop. At 8:00 AM, the
program officially opened. An opening prayer was led by Professor Fe A. Quisil and
National Anthem was conducted by Prof. Julieta T. Canda. An Opening Remarks was
given by Mr. Prisco J. Pongase, Principal of Awa Elementary School and Dr. Adelyne
M. Costelo-Abrea, Executive Director and Provost of PNU-Mindanao. Then,
presentations of participants by Dr. Sophia B. Aloy followed.
The statement of purpose was then given by Dr. Concepcion G. Belza. Then, an
intermission by KADIPAN members followed.
After which, the Learner and the 21st Century Learning Skills Leacture-
Workshop Proper took place. Prof Jeannete T. Gongora was the key speaker during
this part of the program. It was then followed by Differentiated Instruction with Focus
on Tiered Activities by Dr. Rennie C. Saranza. Lastly, Dr. Fe S. Bermiso talked about
the Computer-Aided Classroom Strategies.
At 10:00 AM, a light snack was given to the teachers of Awa Elementary School.
Then, an Evaluation of the Activity by Dr. Evelyn R. Nada took place.
Final words were uttered by Mrs. Carmelita C. Colaste, teacher of Awa
Elementary School. She emphasized three essential things in being a teacher:
Competence, Commitment, and Compassion.
At 12 noon, the students restored the venue and went back to PNU Mindanao
campus.
