ASSUMPTIONS & LIMITATIONS

1. This template is in accordance with Reference 2 except as follows:

a. Weld of end plate to flanges are designed as either fillet welds or Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) welds. Ref 2 uses CJP welds only.
b. Ref 2 evaluates bolts for the strong axis moment only. This template includes axial loads as well as weak axis moments in determining
bolt sizes for the tension case. In the case of weak axis moments, the moment arm for this moment is calculated using a
compression force located using a box of 0.8bf. See Ref 1, p14-5, Figure 14-3.
2. Moments are considered to be fully reversible.
3. This template is not set up for high seismic areas.

CONNECTION DESIGN

Connection Limit States (Ref 3, Section 2.6)

1. Bolt tension rupture due to direct tension and prying action

2. Bolt shear rupture due to shear at interface of end plate and column
3. Flexural yielding of the end-plate material near the tension flange bolts
4. Bearing failure of end plate at bolts
5. Shear yielding of the end plate material.
6. Shear rupture of the end plate through the outside bolt holes.
7. Rupture of beam tension flange to end plate welds
8. Rupture of beam web tension region to end plate welds
9. Shear yielding of beam web to end plate weld
10. Shear yielding of beam web

Bolt Tension Rupture, Bolt Shear Rupture, End Plate Geometry

Design of bolts are according to the method described in Ref 2

Section 2.2.3. The no-prying action bolt strength is calculated
in accordance with the design equations in this reference.
This implies that the end plate and column flange will exhibit
thick plate behavior.

For bolts, f= 0.750

Notes
1. gc is selected from the Project Settings based on the column flange width, the clearance of the Washer OD to the column web,
and the gage must be less than the widthy of the column flange (Ref 2, Clause 2.1).Thus the first gage that satisfies
all of the following is chosen:gc + 2Edr < bfc and 0.5(gc - Washer OD) > kc - tfc + twc/2 and gc <bfb.
2. Dimension "bep" is calculated as follows:
a. Ref 2, Section 2.1, Assumption 5 requires the baseplate maximum width for design purposes to be limited to the beam
flange width + 1". This is used as a minimum plate width to allow welding.
b. Minimum plate width must be equal to the column bolt gage + 2 times the plate edge distance (assume sheared edges).
c. Plate width is rounded up to the nearest 1" for US output dimensions and the nearest 10mm for metric output dimensions.
3. From Ref 2, Table 3.1 and 3.3, fMnp = f2Pt(h1 + h2 + h3 + h4). Setting Mnp = Muz and solving for Pt gives the tension
in the bolts due to Mz.
4. Neither Ref 2 nor Ref 3 consider axial loads in the bolt tension calcs. This template includes them in the bolt tension calcs by dividing
the axial load by the total number of bolts, 8 for Type "A" connections, 16 for Type "B" connections.
5. Neither Ref 2 nor Ref 3 consider weak axis moments in the bolt tension calcs. This calc considers it by using the same assumptions
as used for the strong axis moment . The moment arm in this case is assumed to be calculated from a point located 0.4b f from the
beam centerline. Thus the moment arm is gc +0.4bf. The 0.4bf is 1/2 of the 0.8bf used assumed for weak axis moments in baseplates
(see Ref 1, Figure 14-3). The number of bolts that carry this tension force is 4 for Type "A" connections and 8 for Type "B" connections.
6. Ref 2, Section 2.1, Item 4 recommends that shear forces be carried by the compression side bolts. Thus the shear is carried by
4 bolts for a Type "A" connection and by 8 bolts for a Type "B" bolt.
7. Bolts between the beam flanges must not overlap. For this check, this template assumes a spacing of the two closest
bolts to be a minimum of 2*pb.

Select the first connection that passes both the Design Checks and the Geometry Checks.

Flexural Yielding of the End Plate Near the Tension Bolts (End Plate Thickness)

Notes:
1. For design purposes, Dimension "bep must be less than the beam flange width + 1" (Ref 2, Section 2.1, Item 5).
bep = smaller of calculated plate size above or b fb +1 = #N/A in
2. Neither Ref 2 nor Ref 3 considers axial loads or weak axis moment in checking the plate thickness. To consider these effects,
this template applies a multiplier to the strong axis moment. This multiplier is the sum of the bolt tensions due to strong axis
moment, weak axis moment, and axial loads divided by the bolt tension due to strong axis moment only.
Multiplier =(TMz + TMy +TFx)/TMz = #N/A

Ref 3, Section 2.5.3, assumption 9 requires beam web to end plate welds in the vicinity of the tension bolts to be designed to develop
the yield strength of the beam web unless the full design strength of the beam is not required. This template designs selects the

Column Flange Bearing Failure at Bolt Holes

For Bolt Bearing, f= 0.75 (Ref 1, J3.10)

Shear is only carried by the compression side bolts. For the purpose of this calculation, it is assumed that the top is the
compression side since it is possible that the edge distance to the end of the beam could result in a smaller L c distance than
the bolt spacing. Note that shear is assumed to be applied upward.

When stiffeners are required, the force the stiffener must be designed for is:
Fsu = Mmagnified/(db - tfb) - min(fRn1,fRn2,fRn3,fRn4) = #N/A kips

For stiffener sizing, f= 0.900

Select a stiffener width that is less than (bfc - twc)/2. The width will be rounded down to the nearest 10mm for metric output and 1/4" for
US output. By choosing the maximum width, this minimizes stiffener weld sizes. Note that the minimum stiffener width of Ref 4,
Eq 4.3-2 must be met.

bs = max(bfb/3-tpz/2, (bfc-twc)/2) = bs = #N/A in

Determine the stiffener thickness. 3 cases must be considered.

1. Stiffener area calculated in the table below must be met. When calculating this area, there are two stiffeners and the corner clip must
be subtracted out.
2. The thickness must satisfy Ref 4, Eq 4.3-3.
3. Thickness required for shear strength. This thickness is calculated assuming 1/2 depth stiffeners since this template only considers
a moment connection with a beam on one side only. The shear strength of the stiffener in the case where beams are on both sides
of the column must consider the flange force from both beams (Ref 4, Eq 4.3-4). Note that there are two stiffeners.

Connecting transverse stiffeners to the column web. Weld size is calculated in accordance with Ref 4, Eq 4.3.9. This equation is for 1/2
depth stiffeners. Logic for choosing 1/2 depth stiffeners is the same as when determining the stiffener thickness.
