IMO PUBLICATIONS
1. SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea): Mainly deals with maritime safety. The first
version was in 1914 after sink age of TITANIC
2. SOLAS Amendments: The amendments came in force at various periods to
SOLAS regulations this are available in edition 2003/2004/2005.

3. ISM CODE (International Safety Management Code): Deals mainly with safe
management of vessel and personals on board it has been made compulsory
to all merchant vessels above 500 GRT since 1st July 2002.
4. IMDG CODE (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code): Mainly sets
out in details the requirements applicable to each individual substance. This
code may be applied voluntary basis from 1st Jan 07; it is pending official
entry from 1st Jan 08.
5. BLU CODE for Bulk Carriers : Deals with safe practice for
Loading/Unloading of Bulk Carriers
6. CODE FOR SAFE PRACTICE FOR CARGO STOWAGE AND SECURING: Gives
detail guideline for cargo stowage and securing.
7. MARPOL (International convention for prevention of pollution from
ships): Gives details for preventing Marine pollution due oil spillage.
8. POLLUTION PREVENTION EQUIPMENTS UNDER MARPOL : Gives details of
equipments which can be used to prevent oil pollution
9. REGULATION FOR PREVENTION OF AIR POLLUTION FROM SHIPS: Gives
details about permissible limits and other information about air pollution
from ship’s exhausts.
10. ANTI FOULING SYSTEM : The anti fouling system used for protection of
vessel’s structure but it used to cause a damage to marine environment and
aquatic organism gives guidance to type of anti fouling system can be used.
11. GUIDELINE ON THE CONVENTION ON THE PREVENTION OF MARINE
POLLUTION BY DUMPING WASTE AND OTHER MATTER 1972: Used to refer
as guidance for garbage management system.
12. CRUDE OIL WASHING SYSTEM: Used on tankers for discharging maximum
cargo using this system.
13. PROCEDURES FOR PORT STATE CONTROL: Gives guideline for port state
control inspections.
14. BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT: Guideline for control and management of
ship’s ballast water to minimize transfer of harmful aquatic organism and
pathogens.
15. BUNKER SAMPLE GUIDELINES: Now it is mandatory to retain the sample of
every bunker this book gives guidance how to do so.
16. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON REVISION OF THE INTERNATIONAL
REGULATIONS FOR PREVENTING COLLISION AT SEA 1972: The COLREG was

in force since 1972 and followed by world wide some amendments were
made and introduced in 2003. This book gives amended ROR.
17. SHIP’S ROUTEING: Gives details about traffic separations schemes and
other routeings measures that have been adopted by maritime safety
committee.
18. STCW WITH AMENDMENTS: Gives details about safety standards required to
be maintained for personals on board. The standard of training
requirements and other details.

sustain for longer period in cold water as survivor

1. ADMIRALITY LIST OF RADIO SIGNALS (NP 281-285): In six volumes it gives
comprehensive source covering all aspects of maritime communications.
2. ADMIRALITY LIST OF LIGHTS AND FOG SIGNALS (NP 74-84): Gives details
of all light houses, light ships, lit floating marks (over 8 mtrs), and lights of
navigational significance.
3. ADMIRALITY SAILING DIRECTIONS: Designed to assist ocean going vessels
and provides essential information on all aspects of navigation. It is
complimentary to admiralty standard nautical charts.
4. ADMIRALITY TIDE TABLES: Gives daily predictions of time and height of
high and low water over 230 standard ports and 6000 secondary ports.
5. ADMIRALTY TIDAL STREAMS ATLAS: gives details major tidal streams in
diagram form which helps to calculate tidal stream rate for required date.
6. ADMIRALTY DISTANCE TABLE (NP 350 1-3): Gives details of distances
between major ports and conversions.
7. CHART CORRECTION LOG (NP 133 A): A log record to chart correction
details. This gives us information about the charts corrected till last date at
a glance.
8. CATALOGE OF ADMIRALTY CHARTS AND PUBLICATIONS (NP 131):
Comprehensive reference in graphical and textual form of all admiralty
charts and publications worldwide listed by regions.
9. IALA MARITIME BUOYAGE SYSTEM (NP 735): Description of combined
cardinal and lateral buoyage system.
10. OCEAN PASSAGE FOR WORLD (NP 136): Reference for ocean voyage
planning.
11. SYMBOLS AND ABBREVATIONS USED ON ADMIRALTY CHARTS (5011):
Details of all symbols used with information on hydrography, topography
and abbreviations of principal English.
12. MARINER’S HAND BOOK (NP 100): Gives essential information including
information on charts, operational information, information about

regulations, tides, meteorology, reporting of hydrographical information
etc.
13. ADMIRALTY NOTICES TO MARINERS: Gives important changes to charts and
lights (including temporary), radio signals, sailing directions are listed in
weekly notice to mariners. An annual edition is also published.

In addition to above publications due regard must be given to draught of vessel,
weather conditions and predicted weather reports, Radio and Local warnings
including reports received by Navtex. Vessels characteristics should be kept in
mind for plotting alteration of courses.

IMO ship routing guide gives information on all traffic separation schemes, and
areas to be avoided that have been adopted by IMO. Along with this it will give
information about deep water routes and recommendations for navigation.

In weekly notices to mariners a publication list will be given it gives information
regarding new metric charts, charts superseding the charts of same number, new
charts which are due for publication within next few months and also new editions
of books and other hydrographical publications. Officer in-charge of maintaining
the charts and publications should maintain the list of new charts and publications
which will replace existing one and order the new list well in time via company
approved method. On receiving the new editions the old publications must be
destroyed in proper manner.
If we want to order a particular chart we will have to give the number of chart,
Name of chart date of publication date of last new edition and date and number of
last small correction. In case a new chart is required we need to give only the
number of chart and name of chart, generally the chart will be supplied with latest
edition with updated corrections. In case the new chart is published then give the
date of publication.

On receiving a new chart or new edition details of the chart to be entered in chart
log the folio number against the chart number in the index. The date chart
received. Check the last notice to which the chart is corrected now check the
index of charts which are affected in each weekly edition to notices to mariners
from the one including last correction entered in the chart if any notices affecting

the chart have been issued since last notice enter them against the chart in chart
log and correct the chart from that date - to date. Once all corrections are entered
in the chart the chart is safe to use.
