ASSIGNMENT SOLUTION #2

1. Number of links (nL) = 6

Number of 1 DOF joints (lower pairs) (nJ)= 6 (R) +1 (P) = 7
DOF of the mechanism = 3*(6-1)-3*7+1*7= 1

Ans: (b) 1

2. Number of links (nL) = 4

Number of 1 DOF joints (lower pairs) (nJ) = 1 (R) + 3 (P) = 4
Number of 3P loops = 1 (3P)
DOF of the mechanism = 3*(4-1)-3*4+1*4+1 = 2 (Failure due to special geometry)

Ans: (c) 2

3. The number of independent inversions of a RRPP chain is 3 (RRPP, RPPR, PRRP).

Ans: (c) 3

1
4. The number of independent inversions of a RRRP chain is 2 (RRRP, RRPR).

Ans: (b) 2

5. Number of links (nL) = 5

Number of 1 DOF joints (lower pairs) (nJ) = 4 (R) + 2 (P) = 6
DOF of the mechanism = 3*(5-1)-3*6+1*6+1 = 1
(Failure due to special dimension/parallel configuration of links 2 and 3)

Ans: (b) 1

6. As seen from the dead-center configurations, the mechanism is of double rocker type,
where the rocker does not cross the line of frame. Thus, the mechanism has to be a
Grashof chain with BC as the smallest. For the given link length set indicating (AB, BC,
CD, DA), only (5, 3, 4, 5) cm. satisfies the criteria.

Ans: (b) (5, 3, 4, 5) cm.

7. For the given slider-crank mechanism, offset = 3 cm.

Let, C1 and C2 be the two dead center configurations of the slider with C1C2 = 5 cm.
Also, the smallest distance of the slider from the ground hinge of the crank over the entire
range of motion, i.e., AC1 = 5 cm.

2
For dead-center configurations of the slider crank mechanism, two links AB and BC has
to be collinear in open and overlapping configurations.
Hence, AC1 = BC – AB = 5 cm.

AC2 = AB + BC = cm. = 9.4868 cm.

Thus, the length of the crank AB = (AC2 - AC1) / 2 = 2.2434 cm.

Ans: (d) 2.2434 cm.

8. For the given 4-bar linkage with L1 = 2 cm, L2 = 6 cm, L3 = 8 cm and L4 = 10 cm, link L1
is fixed to the ground, which is the shortest link. It is a Grashof chain (2+10<6+8)with
shortest link fixed to the ground. Thus, all other links will rotate with respect to the
ground, and the mechanism is of double crank type.

Ans: (a) A double crank.

9. For the given 4-bar linkage with L1=2 cm, L2= 3 cm, L3= 4 cm and L4= 6 cm, link L1 is
fixed to the ground, which is the shortest link. It is a non-Grashof chain (2+6>3+4) with
shortest link fixed to the ground. Thus, all other links will rock/oscillate with respect to
the ground, and the mechanism is of double rocker type.

Ans: (b) Double rocker.

10. The given mechanism is a RRPP chain with shortest link fixed. This is always a Grashof
chain. Thus, for any value of l2, link 2 will have a complete rotation with respect to the
ground link

Ans: (c) For any value of link l2.
