D. Discussion
1. Texts Types are written for a variety of purposes, using different forms and standards of
composition. These forms of writing are known as text types.
2. Narrative essays
- tells a story about a real-life experience
- Usually written in the first person point of view that helps engage reader.
- Uses “I” sentences which give readers a feeling of being part of the story
Example 1

And so it was that I started out early in the morning. I had put on a calico dress to
work in and to suit my chosen trade. In a little bundle, covered with brown paper
with a grease-spot in the center of it, was my lunch. I had an idea that every working
girl carried a lunch, and I was trying to give out the impression that I was quite used
to this thing. Indeed, I considered the lunch a telling stroke of thoughtfulness in my
new role, and eyed with some pride, in which was mixed with a tad of dismay, the
grease-spot, which was gradually growing in size.

Example 2

First, you have to stand on your own two feet. As much as our parents love and
support us, they can't go to our school and confess to the principal that we stole a
candy bar from Sara. We have to do that. Neither can they walk into the Condé Nast
office and nail a job interview for us. At some point, we have to put on our "big girl
pants" and be brave, even if we're not.

Also, there's a difference between love and co-dependence. Being grateful to have
someone to turn to for love and support is not the same as needing someone to
turn to for love and support. With the loss of my father, I've also lost my sounding
board. All I can glean from that is it's time to look within myself and make proper
assessments. If I can't make sound decisions with the tools already in my kit, then I
risk falling for anything.

3. Descriptive essays
- Paints a picture with words.
- Strives to communicate a deeper meaning through the description.
- The writer uses colourful words and sensory detail.

Example 1
Richmond Beach was my spiritual hangout in my childhood. It is a rocky beach in the
city of Richmond Beach, which can be accessed by a long downhill drive (by car or
bicycle) from the city of Edmonds. Or, as I did often, took the 30-minute walk from
my house to the calm waters through a tranquil stroll through the woods of
Woodway. It used to be a place inhabited by Native Americans, but now it is
occupied by mostly Caucasian people.

Example 2
The whole way along the inside of the fence there are square shaped shrubs, which
are about half the height of the fence. Beside the row of shrubs on the right side,
there is a small path made of the kind of gravel you would put in a fish tank. The
gravel has a tiny bit of a purple color. The path turns left at the bottom of the
picture and continues along the bottom. On the path there are two rows of bagels
on the ground. The bagels are plain. In all there are about twenty-four bagels that
are visible in the picture.

4. Expository Essay
- an informative piece of writing that represents a balanced analysis of a topic
- The writer define or explain a topic through facts, statistics and example
- Based on facts and not personal feelings
- Writers don reveal their true emotion
- Writers don’t write in the first person point of view

Example 1

Lebron James (LeBron Raymone James Sr.) is one of the most popular basketball
players now and sometimes considered the best basketball player in the world. He
won the National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award four
times, three NBA Finals MVP Player awards, and two Olympic gold medals. James
has also been in 15 NBA All-Star Games and was the MVP All-Star MVP three times.
This is just a short list of his accomplishments, as he has dominated the sport since
his teen years. Even though people know him as a phenomenal basketball player,
this essay will divulge information about his private life and what journey he went
on to become a professional basketball player.

Example 2

Measles is in the news again for a recent outbreak. In the U.S. about 300 cases have
been reported as of late. However, measles is an old virus. The first emergence of
measles was around 500 AD. Therefore, it has been around since early history, and
continues to affect people, despite vaccinations. The virus produces a highly
contagious disease, and that is one of the reasons it has lasted so long in the lives of
humans. This essay will describe the signs and symptoms, causes, diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of this highly infectious virus.

5. Persuasive essay
- The goal is to convince the reader to accept the writers point of view or
recommendation
- Exert opinion and sound reasoning.
- Build a case using facts and logic.
- The writer presents all sides of argument and must be able to communicate
clearly and without equivocation why a certain position is correct.

Example 1
Technology
Technologies do not make us dumber or smarter, but we can choose to be
smarter by making the best of what technology has to offer—but also by
thinking much harder about what we want it to do for us. But we need to start
thinking not just about technology, but also the sort of intellectual and moral
beings we want to be, as this will guide our creation of technologies. In striving
to humanize the internet in this way I think there is every chance that we can
become ‘smarter,’ but this depends on us. No technology will do the job for us.

Example 2
Song with curse words should be allowed at school dance?
Language can be powerful and sometimes even harmful, but censorship of
language is one of the worst things we can do as a society. I believe that the
content of the song is more important than a few curse words. If a song's
content is designed to provoke, intimidate, or make someone feel inferior, then
I believe that is more harmful than a few impolite words in a chorus.

V. Post-writing
A. Generalization
The teacher will ask the students some questions.
1. What are the text types? Describe them.
2. What is a type of text that tells a story?
3. What is the type of text which the writer uses colourful words and sensory details.
4. What do you called a text that the purpose is to convince people to believe in the
writer’s point of view or recommendation?
5. A type of text that uses facts and statistics.
B. Evaluation
At ¼ sheet of paper, answer your book on page 445 through 447.
