Concrete Mix Design

This document provides the concrete mix design for a Class A concrete to be used in a project to supply and install a 90m high telecom tower in Libya. The mix design specifies a target mean compressive strength of 42 MPa at 28 days with a 400kg/m3 cement content and water-cement ratio of 0.45. It also provides the calculations for the fresh concrete weight, dry aggregate weight, admixture content, and fine and coarse aggregate proportions in the mix.

1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This specification defines the mix of concrete material to be used for each concrete
class based on preliminary test on constituent material and mixed concrete.

1.2 Reference Documents

All material, testing and design shall be in accordance with concrete works
specification SPC. N° CB-E-4002.

2. CONCRETE MIX DESIGN “CLASS A” (C 35/30)

For moderate section such as footings, slabs on grade, retaining walls, beams, etc.

2.1 Characteristic

The minimum compressive characteristic strength required at 28 days, measured on

cubic specimen, is 35 MPa. As per variability of concrete production results, it is
necessary to design the mix so to have a mean strength greater than specified
characteristic strength. For a fix amount of the:

fm = fc +ks
where:
fm = target mean strength
fc = specified characteristic strength
ks = margin which is the product of
s = standard deviation
k = constant

2.1.1 Grade

In the “Unified Code of Practice CP 110 (BS)”, the margin 7.5 MPa is permitted for the
mix design of grade 25 or 30.

fm = 35 + 7.5 = 42.5 MPa

2.1.2 Standard Deviation

In the road research laboratory “Design of Concrete Mix” Road Note N.4, the constant
is derived from mathematics of the normal distribution and increases as the proportion
of defectives is decreased, thus:

k for 10% defectives = 1.28

k for 5% defectives = 1.64
k for 2.5% defectives = 1.96
k for 1% defectives = 2.33

For 5% defective, defectives level permitted in CP 110, k = 1.64, thus:

fm = fc + 1.64s

Approximate estimate of the standard deviation s, under good degree of control

(proportioning by weight and well-graded aggregates, humidity control of aggregate,
use of additives and constant supervision):

s = 30 ÷ 40 kg/cm2 = 4 MPa

consequently:
fm = 35 + 1.64 x 4 = 42 MPa

2.2 Cement content

The minimum cement content required is 400 kg/m3

2.3 Water Cement ratio

The free water cement ratio required is 0.45 (W/C)

2.4 Water content

Free water content determination:

Free water = cement content x W/C = 180 Lt.

2.5 Aggregate Size

The aggregate has a maximum size of 32mm

2.6 Calculation of Concrete weight

To calculate the fresh concrete weight per cubic meter, the formula is:

UM = 10 Ga(100-A) + CM(1-Ga+Gc) – WM(Ga-1)

Where:

UM = weight of fresh concrete kg/m3

Ga = weighted average specific gravity of combined fine and coarse
aggregate, SSD = 2.618 g/cm3
Gc = specific gravity of cement = 3.15g/cm3
A = air content % (2% - 3%)
WM = mixing water requirement = 180
CM = cement required = 400 kg/m3
UM = 2352 kg/m3

2.7 Admixture

The estimated mixing admixture type plasticizer Rheobuild is 1.2 litres (1.4kg) per
100 kg of cement equal to 4.5 litres = 5 kg/m3.

2.8 Dry weight of Aggregate

The estimates dry weight of aggregate:

2352 – 180 – 400 – 5 = 11767 kg/m³

2.9 Oven Dry weight of concrete

The estimate batch weight (oven dry) for a cubic meter of concrete are:

Water = 180 kg/m3

Cement = 400 kg/m3
Admixtures = 5 kg/m3
Total Aggregate = 1767 kg/m3
Fresh Concrete = 2352 kg/m3

The fine and coarse aggregate content are obtained from the job mix enclosed, where:

Fine sand = 30 = 1767 x 30% = 530 kg/m³

Crushed Agg. 3-8mm = 13 = 1767 x 13% = 230 kg/m³
Crushed Agg. 8-16mm = 38 = 1767 x 38% = 671 kg/m³
Crushed Agg. 16-20mm = 19 = 1767 x 19% = 336 kg/m³

2.11 Aggregate weight

To obtain the weight of aggregate in saturated surface dry condition, the amount of the
mixing water should be increased by the weight of water absorbed by the aggregate
(see mix design certificate enclosed).

2.12 Effective aggregate weight

Basically, to obtain the effective weight of aggregate in saturated surface bulk

condition, the amount of the mixing water should be reduced of water corresponding to
moisture content of aggregate.

2.13 Quantities of ingredient in trial mix

The effective quantities of ingredients for the trial mix are:

Fine sand = 518 kg/m3

Crushed Agg. 3-8mm = 226 kg/m3
Crushed Agg. 8-16mm = 659 kg/m3
Crushed Agg. 16-20mm = 331 kg/m3
Cement S.R.L. = 400 kg/m3
Water = 213 Ltrs.
Admixture = 5 kg/m³
See attached “Concrete Mix Design Class 1-A” on the next page. Trial mix was
conducted in presence of Company Representative and modified to obtain the
workability required.

2.14 Admixture

The superplastisizer, RHEOBUILD 561, was added at a weight percent of mix cement
of 1.2%. The admixture is added after approximately 80 to 90% of the water were
added. The remaining water is used to remove the final amounts of admixture that
adhere to the admixture-dispensing container.
