Advantages and Disadvantages of Learning by heart

Learning by heart is memorizing facts and notes without any thought. Such
kind of learning is widely used both by teachers and students in our country.
Besides, it is said that learning by heart is a necessary step in learning certain
subjects. However, some scholars are not in favor of learning by heart. Hence, we
need to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of learning by heart.
Learning by heart has positive effects on our academic life. Firstly, if we
learn alphabet, numbers, and multiplication tables by heart, we do not take a lot of
time to remember them. Secondly, if we memorize notes, facts, poems, definitions
and theories, it takes faster to put them in the brain. This is because we do not need
to emphasize the importance of deep understanding over the recall of facts. If we
can write them exactly in the examination, we will get full marks and good grades.
In fact, our examinations focus on rote learning indirectly. Thirdly, we can have an
ability to recall basic facts quickly after memorizing the content. We can also get
the foundational knowledge about the subject. However, there are certain aspects
against learning by heart. To begin with, learning by heart does not encourage deep
understanding the content of the subject, but it is based on repetition. As a result, if
we cannot repeat some facts again and again, we will forget them. Secondly,
learning by heart is ok for short notes and facts, but we can find it difficult to focus
on long passages as well as sums. In working out the sums, it is not easy to connect
the theories and formula. Thirdly, learning by heart does not encourage us to
improve our skills of subjects. This is because we can recite some definitions and
theories, but we do not know how to apply them in real situations. For example, we
can recite the definition of “work done ", but we do not know how to apply it.
In conclusion, in spite of the fact that there are certain aspects for learning
by heart, there are also some facts against it in our academic life. Anyway, if we
understand the pros and cons of learning by heart, we can exploit it to help achieve
our academic goals in life.
