TrueCall® is the only RAN network performance and optimization application with the ability to drill
down to subscriber level individual call and data events in real time, making it extremely beneficial to
performance engineers, planning and dimensioning engineers, customer service representatives, and
any other customer experience roles in the organization.
This document provides procedures for installing and using the TrueCall software to analyze your
network data. Refer to one of the following chapters for more information about using TrueCall.
l Identify where the network is falling back to 3G and not utilizing 4G resources
l Analyze Layer 3 call event messaging (when available)
l Support verification of self-organizing (SON) impact
l Enhance policy functions with cell congestion triggers and feeds
l Prepare for the rollout of new technologies, such as VoLTE and HetNets
l Analyze device performance and compare performance by make and model
Note: The actual TrueCall server runs on Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 or CentOS 7.3).
* The TrueCall Windows client is a 32-bit application and can only use up to 2GB of memory.
Some memory intensive activities, like large queries or heat map exports, can exceed the available
memory and result in display errors. If a memory error occurs, close extraneous maps and
reports, increase the map bin size, or generate maps in smaller areas. Additionally you can reduce
the number of calls displayed in the Call Table.
2. Click Install.
After installation is complete, launch the TrueCall Client from the desktop TrueCall Icon or through
the Window Start Menu:
or
Access the servers dialog window from the TrueCall menu bar.
2. Click New.
3. Enter the following information:
l Server: a unique reference name for the server
l Host: the TrueCall Server IP address
l Port: the TrueCall Server port number
l Username
l Password
4. Click Save.
Note: Make sure that the time zone matches your market.
The TrueCall deployment at an operator site usually consists of multiple servers that host 3G and
LTE data. After you start the TrueCall client, you can connect to any server through these steps:
3. Make sure you have server access permissions (username and password)
4. Click Connect.
If you were connected to a server the last time you closed TrueCall and you start it again, you will be
automatically connected to that server. If you want to connect to another server, open the servers
dialog window (File > Server) then select the server you wish to connect to, and click Connect.
After you are connected, the TrueCall client acquires server information, loads your most current
network database, and centers on the market associated with your TrueCall Server.
To configure the Proxy setting when the TrueCall client sits behind a firewall:

o Call Table Size—Set the number of calls in the call table (50,000 max).
o Smooth Maps—Applies a Gaussian blur smoothing to the map’s bins.
o Multimap Tooltip—Allows you to hover over a bin and view all the corresponding bin values
for all open maps at the same time.
Note: Each open map must be viewed first to activate the multimap tooltips. For example,
if you open two maps at one time and hover over a bin on Map A, you will see that bin's
value in the tooltip. When you move to Map B and hover a bin, you will see the
corresponding values for Map B AND Map A in the tooltip.
o Show Delta Compare—Allows a map comparison to show the difference between the two
maps being compared. Also adds another column for "Delta Value" to the KPI Explorer.
o HTTPS for Bing Maps—Use HTTPS when connecting to Bing maps.
l International section
o Specify the distance units to display (does not affect calculations of maps/reports).
o Specify date and time formats.
l External text viewer—Specify the External Text Viewer when exporting tables and Reports.
NETSCOUT recommends setting Microsoft Excel as the default external text viewer.
l Custom Map Server—This option must be set up by the TrueCall Support team. If you have a
Custom Map Server, when you configure and enable this option TrueCall will get Land Map
images from the server you specified.
l PNG/KMZ Export Map Resolution—Control the resolution on exported maps using the
Pixels per Bin setting.
The workspace allows you to quickly generate maps and reports for any time period of interest –
daily, hourly, real-time, or historical. You may choose the time period, the appropriate filters and
map layers, and the desired outputs.
1. Navigation Bar—Use these buttons to move forward and backward between analysis views,
update a map with a new query, and switch to view live data.
2. Bookmarks Bar—Create bookmarks to specific filter sets, so that you can quickly recreate
specific views of your network.
3. Filters Pane—Create the filters used to narrow search results.
4. Map Canvas—View the results of queries. You can create several types of maps and use the
tools on the toolbar to perform actions on the maps you create.
5. KPI Explorer —View Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to the filtered data shown on
the map.
6. Reports Pane—View reports for the selected data.
The following sections provide more details about each of the areas described above.
l Forward and Back – Once you have begun exploring your network with TrueCall, you will see
the Back button become enabled when you commit changes to your filter set. Clicking back
will return TrueCall to its previous state. With this functionality, you can proceed forward and
backward through the operations.
For example, you may test a theory by applying a certain set of filters, but if you are not happy
with the analysis, you can easily return to the previous view and test another theory.
l Commit – Apply selected filters to an analysis. Each time you change a filter, you must commit
the query again.
l Cancel – Cancel an on-going query.
Note: If you click Cancel, you must click Commit to reload the data.
l Bookmark – save the filters from a particular analysis (see Bookmarks Bar).
l Live - Allows user to visualize live calls within maps, KPIs, and tables. Configure the aggregation
interval on the General tab.
When you click the Live button, TrueCall enters live analysis mode.
o To start, pause, or resume live playback, click Live.
o To exit Live Analysis Mode when paused or playing, click Commit.
Note: After each live playback update, the data from the previous update will be lost.
Refer to the following sections for more information about creating and configuring bookmarks:
l Creating a Bookmark

l Exporting and Importing Bookmarks
The Filters pane is located at the upper left side of TrueCall by default. Here, you can define and view
your active filter set.
When changes are made to your active filter set, the Commit Button (on the navigation bar) will
become enabled. When you click this button, it will trigger requests to the TrueCall Server, followed
by updates to all your open views as the new data is received. To track the progress of you requests,
view the Download Status View.
For more information about working with filters, refer to the Working with Filters chapter.
The Map Control tools are located at the left upper area of the map canvas.

to view more information about that element. You will see context-specific information about
any element you click on the map.
l Ruler Tool—Use the ruler tool to measure distances between network elements.
l Area Tools—Use the rectangular and polygon area tools to select areas of interest on the map.
When you use an area tool to select a portion of the map, it is added as a filter criteria.
l Zoom Tools—Use to zoom in and out of a map. You can also use the mouse wheel to zoom in
and out.
l Layers Drop-Down Menu—Use to set the display properties for the different map elements.
l Bin Size Drop-Down Menu—The Bin Size of a map defines the length of each edge in the
square grid of a map. The default bin size is 200 meters, but you may want to change this
value to be larger for maps that cover a large geographic area.
Note: Smaller bin sizes require more memory when executing a query and can result in
memory allocation errors for large maps. Consider increasing bin size for better performance.
For example, increasing the bin size from 50m to 100m reduces memory required by a factor
of four. Increasing from 50m to 200m reduces memory required by a factor of 16.
Note: If a map type is selected or changed, the map data will be retrieved and displayed on
the canvas automatically, even if the layer is hidden in the Layer Control.
Refer to the Working with Maps for more information about creating and working with maps.
The KPI Explorer displays the current statistics values based on the configured filter settings
(selected Area, Time interval, etc.).
For more information about working with the KPI Explorer, refer to the KPI Explorer chapter.
l Top Network Element — Stack ranked list of network elements based on filter results.
l Top Subscriber — Stack ranked list of subscribers (IMSIs, MSIDN) based on filter results.

l Yellow indicates a date for which data is available for some portion of the day (hover over the
date to see the available hours)
l A date with a dot indicates that there was a network update on that date
After adding new filter attributes, click Commit to update the query.
2. Click Commit.
1. Click either the Rectangle Area Filter or the Polygon Area Filter tool.
2. Draw a rectangle over the desired area.
3. Click Commit.
l Report Tables
l Map Canvas
l Call Legend
You can use more than one wildcard character per search term. Wildcard characters can be
positioned anywhere in the search term.
In the example below, the user found a connection in the Call Table with a specific OEM Release
cause, RELEASE_DUE_TO_EUTRAN_GENERATED_REASON, of concern. The user then added the OEM
Release Cause attribute with this value to the filter directly from the Call Table.
After adding new filter attributes, click Commit to update the query.
After you add the filter, it displays in the Filter pane along with any other filtering criteria already
selected.
After you add the filter, it displays in the Filter pane along with any other filtering criteria already
selected.
After you add the filter, it displays in the Filter pane along with any other filtering criteria already
selected.
TrueCall recommends using these filters alone or in combination with other filter criteria to speed
query response times.
For example, if you create a query for IMSI and you add an IMEI filter, TrueCall performs the indexed
IMSI search first, then performs the slower IMEI search on the subset of data. This returns results
more quickly than if you had only added IMEI and searched in the same time range. The second
search must look at every record for the defined time period, which results in a slower query.
The following sections describe event maps and heat maps in more detail and provide procedures
for working with maps.
Note: If the number of calls that satisfies the filter is too large, you can choose to display a
random subset of the calls by selecting Tools > Options > General and setting the number
of calls to display in the Call Table size field. This only changes the number of calls visible on
the map and in the call table. All computed KPIs in the KPI Explorer are calculated using all
criteria that satisfy the filter.
3. Use the Map Canvas controls to zoom in or out or to set layering and bin sizes for the map.
4. Click on a call to view the serving sectors and to view the call details in the tables
l Voice drops
l Data drops
l Traffic density
l Handovers
You can also use them to visualize and improve performance — correlating low performance to
sectors with high interference or poor coverage.
1. Click on the sign above the map area to choose a map type.
2. Select the type of maps to view. You may select up to ten; each will open in a separate tab.
Click OK. The heat map for the selected filter and KPI opens.
3. Use the Map Canvas controls to zoom in or out or to set layering and bin sizes for the map.
l RSRP
l CQI
l Dropped Calls
l Serving Cell by Occurrence
This is a dropped call map like the last map but with the call event layer showing. It shows that each
colored square bin indicates has at least one dropped call in it.
The Call Legend shows you the coloring scheme of the visual representation of the calls on the
canvas. By default (as shown above), the calls on the canvas are drawn as circles with an outline
mapped to its final disposition (termination) and filled according to the call type (Voice, Data, etc).
The Call Legend also shows the meaning of pilot lines drawn on the canvas when calls are selected.
Available pilot lines vary depending on technology. The following table outlines the differences:
Technology Description
3GPP2 (CDMA/EVDO) Primary and Secondary Pilots
GSM Serving Pilot
LTE Serving Pilot
UMTS Serving Pilot, Active Pilot, Monitored Pilot, Polluter Pilot
The NE Legend shows you the color scheme of the Network Elements on the Canvas. By default, the
Network Elements have a black outline with a white fill. When a Network Element is referenced in the
Top NE Report, it is colored green. DAS Nodes are marked with an "A" (for antenna).
Using Thematic Maps overrides the default NE Legend with custom values.
The Map Legend shows you the color mapping for the Map Type you currently have loaded. The
color mapping consists of a numeric value and a color, allowing you to interpret and analyze an area
quickly.
Where the numeric value in the Map Legend is followed by a "No gradient" entry, then this
represents a single value indicated by a single color, and thus no range variation is applicable.
To reset a color table to its default, right click anywhere in the Map Legend and select Default
Color Table.
2. Click on the map canvas where you want to begin your measurement.
3. Move the cursor toward your end point. As you move the cursor, the measuring line follows
the cursor, and a label shows the accumulated distance.
4. Click at the end point, which releases the cursor. The label shows the final distance. The line
and label disappear the next time you click.
To pan the canvas while using the Measure tool, right click-and-drag on the canvas.
The multimap tooltip feature allows you to view the metrics from all open maps on one tooltip. In
the following example, the tooltip shows the value for the selected element for each open map. The
value in bold is the currently open map.
Your bookmark will now automatically refresh each time the time interval elapses
To share bookmarks:
After sharing a bookmark, it is available to other users connected to the same server.
To check whether a bookmark has been shared or not, right-click it. If there is a check mark next to
Shared it has been shared with other users. Select it again to stop sharing.
4. Drag and drop bookmarks from the bar into the folder.
When you click on the folder, any bookmarks inside it appear in a pop-up menu. Select a
bookmark to run it.
Note: Only individual bookmarks may be placed inside a folder. Folders cannot be nested
inside other folders.
To remove a bookmark from a folder, drag it from the folder back to the bookmarks bar.
Note that:
l You may only import a bookmark that matches the current vendor and technology. If you try
to import a bookmark that was created for a different vendor technology, an error displays.
l Only individual bookmarks may be exported. Folders may not be exported.
l Bookmarks can be shared across TrueCall servers and customer markets or regions. Note that
any locally-scoped filters may not be compatible with other TrueCall servers. To maximize
reuse across regional servers, remove any locally-defined filters before export.
To export a bookmark:
1. Right-click a bookmark on the Bookmarks bar and select Export. The Save dialog opens. The
filename for bookmark file defaults to the name of the bookmark with the vendor technology
added. You can rename the file. The extension is .tcb (TrueCall Bookmarks).
To import a bookmark:
1. Select Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks. The Import Bookmarks dialog opens.
2. Navigate to where the saved .tcb file is located. You can rename the bookmark if desired.
3. Click Open. The bookmark is imported. If there is a mismatch with the vendor technology of
the current server or if part of the bookmark is incompatible with the current server, an error
message displays.
Comparison and delta maps may not be exported. If a map has been smoothed, the base,
unsmoothed, version is exported.
Export Considerations
l Use BIL format when exporting for use with Atoll.
l Exported BIL maps are compatible with Atoll version 2.5.9 and higher.
l GRD file format export is in Mercator WGS84 [EPSG:3395]. To ensure accurate mapping
display, the correct projection must be chosen when importing into any external programs.
l The UTM Zone shown by default on the Map Export dialog matches the UTM zone of the map
you are exporting. NETSCOUT recommends that you do not change this setting. In most cases,
the same UTM zone should be selected upon import into an external tool, unless the created
map is very close to the edge of another UTM zone or spans in to another UTM zone. In that
case, adjusting the zone may be beneficial.
l Maps may not exceed 3GB. If you receive an error that your map cannot be saved because it is
too large, increase the map bin size or reduce the area of the map.
l NETSCOUT does not recommend exporting maps that span multiple UTM zones, because the
export can become distorted.
l The ASCII export format outputs the center (lat/lon) position for each bin.
l Set PNG/KMZ map resolution for export using Tools > Options > General.
To export a map:
1. Load a map.
2. Select File > Export Map As and select the type of export. The Map Export dialog opens
preselected for the Format Type you just chose.
6. Click Save. The file is saved with the name of the map. Subsequent exports of the same map
overwrite the map already saved in that location.
Note: BIL format types are exported as gzip files (.gz extension). You must uncompress the
file before using it.
1. Select Comparison in the Filters area. The filter comparison panels open.
2. Click one of the three filter panels (Common, Primary, or Compare) to highlight where the
filter item will be used.
3. You can use the following methods to add filters:
l Click Add Filter in the Filters area. Select the appropriate filter.
l Right-click on any item in any of the Report tables. Select Add to Filter.
l Create a time comparison by choosing either Compare to Previous Day or Compare to
Previous Week from the Add Filter dialog box.
6. Click Commit.
Note: The slide bar is not available when delta mapping is in use. Instead, the resulting map
represents the delta values between the primary and comparison filtering criteria.
Note: Multimap tooltips are not available in maps generated using the comparison feature.
l Position between left and right - display overlay of both Primary and compared map, with
weighting based upon the slider position
If the Delta Comparison option is enabled, a third column that shows the difference between the
primary and comparison values is present.
The colors for each legend are distributed based on its own data set: one for Primary and one for
Compare. The Normalize button will create a color legend based on the data sets.
If, when performing analysis aggregated from multiple markets, you want to look more closely at
any one market, you can log into that market's source server to investigate it more closely.
The Geolocation feature is available for LTE and UMTS GeoSoft RAN probe enabled Network
Equipment Vendors (NEV).
1. Click Add Filter in the Filter pane to open the Select Filter dialog.
2. Select Composite Call. Click OK.
3. Select True.
Call Table. The associated fragments for that call appear in the Fragment Table.
The TrueCall Report tables are located at the lower part of the TrueCall screen by default. Note: Use
the Window menu to configure which tables appear on the TrueCall user interface.
l Only the elements that satisfied the filter criteria in effect are populated into the tables, except
for the Network Element Table, which contains all the cells all the time
l The table display is linked to the map display
o For example, selecting a call in the map will highlight the corresponding row in the Call Table.
o If a cell is selected in the Network Element table, it will be highlighted in the map.
The following sections contain more information about each type of report table:

Composite Calls for more information about querying for composite calls.
l Click on a call in the Call Table to populate its corresponding fragments in the Fragment Table.
If there are no fragments for the selected call, an error message appears and the selected call
duplicates in the Fragment Table.
l Each row of the Fragment Table holds a call fragment with the details like IMSI, start/end time,
start/end cell ID, radio link conditions, final disposition, etc.
l A TrueCall user can use the Fragment Table to view details of individual call fragments.
l A Message view can be launched from a selected call fragment by right-clicking on it and
selecting Open Call in Message Viewer.
l When a call fragment is selected in the Fragment Table it is highlighted in the Map view.
l When a call fragment is selected in the Map view, the corresponding row is highlighted in the
Fragment Table.
The Top Device Table lists the statistics for each model of mobile that are selected by the Filter.
l When a Filter is in effect, all UEs that satisfied the Filter criteria are used to compute the Top
Device Table
l Each row of the Top Device Table represents the statistics of all the UEs belonging to the same
device model / manufacturer
l Sorting by key attributes, like call drop rate, can quickly identify relative performance for
different devices
l A device can be added to the filter criteria by right clicking on the row and selecting “Add Device
to Filter.”
The Strip Chart View has two main areas: the axis control area and the graph (shown below). Use the
axis control the KPIs shown in the graph. The time period shown in the graph comes from time
selections made in the calendar filter.
4. Select Add to choose the fields for the left axis and right axis. You can display data on two
axes–left and right–to allow different scales.
Note: When adding KPIs to the Strip Chart without specifying the axis, after both axes are
populated, all subsequent adds will show on the left axis.
Note: You can change the axis for any KPI by selecting it and clicking Swap.
You can also create a strip chart from any field currently displayed in the KPI Explorer, by right-
clicking the field in the KPI Explorer and selecting Show in Strip Chart. If both axes are populated
and the axis has not been specified, KPIs add to the left axis by default.
You can also export an image of the strip chart or export the data from the chart.
6.10 Histograms
Histograms display the output of a filter results using a graphical representation of the distribution
of data. The horizontal (x) axis represents the KPI range, and the vertical (y) axis represents the
number of calls.
2. Enter the new values for the bin width and bin start value.
3. Select the maximum number of bins for the histogram.
4. Click OK.
This allows you to sort, prioritize, and visualize the cells of concern and decide upon the next step.
Detection of Overshooting Cells is determined by the reported Timing Advance (TA) and calculated
Inter Site Distance (ISD).
Note: Indoor and repeater sites are not included in the report.
Queries can be created in the same manner as other TrueCall queries. Only cells detected as
Overshooting within the query area will be displayed.
When a cell is detected as Overshooting, it will display in the table with the following:
l Cell ID
l Severity - High, Medium, Low
l Calculated Inter Site Distance (ISD)
l 95%ile 3GPP distance
l 0-0.7 ISD [%] - amount of calls detected in the 0-0.7 ISD range
l 0.7-1 ISD [%] - amount of calls detected in the 0.7-1 ISD range
l 1-1.5 ISD [%] - amount of calls detected in the 1-1.5 ISD range
l Selecting the Cell in the table will also overlay a RED cell range indicator showing:
l 0-0.7 ISD band (Dark red)
l 0.7-1 ISD band (Medium red)
l 1-1.5 ISD band (Light red)
l Using Overshooting Cell Sub Menu
Right clicking on an object in the Overshooting View displays a sub menu to complete the following
actions:
l Add NE to Filter - Add cell to filter list with existing filter setting
l Replace Current NE Filter - Replace all existing filters with only selected cell
l Remove from NE Filter - Remove cell from the filter list
l Center On - Center Map on the chosen cell
l Filter and Commit
l BlackList - add cell to Black List option
l Copy Data In This Row
l Save Table As Tab Separated .txt
l Open Table In External Viewer - Open table in Excel
Blacklists are individual to each user. Each user can maintain their own black list.
To add a cell to the black list, right click on it and select Add NE To Blacklist. Once a cell has been
added to the black list, the cell will be visible in the Black List window.
To view the blacklist, click the Blacklist icon on the side of the Overshooting table.
After a cell has been added into the Blacklist, the Blacklist window will show the following:
l Cell ID
l Severity
l Intersite Distance [miles/meters]
l 95%ile 3GPP Distance [miles/meters]
Right click on a row in the Blacklist to display the following menu options:
l Add NE to Filter - Add cell to filter list with existing filter setting
l Replace Current NE Filter - Replace all existing filters with only selected cell
l Remove from NE Filter - Remove cell from the filter list

You may encounter call records or subscribers that indicate problems within the core network. You
can launch ISA from TrueCall to perform in-depth root cause analysis of call records or of specific
subscribers. You can drill to ISA for
To drill to ISA:
1. Commit a query.
2. Open either the Call Table or Top Subscriber Report.
3. Right-click on an entry or select up to 10 calls on the Call Table.
4. Select either Analyze Selected Calls in ISA or Analyze <IMSI> in ISA.
Note: When drilling to a specific IMSI, up to a two day date range may be selected. If your
original query contained more than a two day date range, a prompt directs you to select a two
day range.
An ISA login dialog opens. The server is populated with the ISA server that your administrator
has configured.
By default, the calls plotted on the canvas are plotted as circles with an outline mapped to its final
disposition (termination) and filled according to the call type (Voice, Data, etc) - see also Customizing
the Map Legend. This functionality is overridden by Thematic Maps, removing the outline color and
filling the calls with a color generated from the values of the field set to thematic. Thematic maps can
be set from the Call Table, Top NE Table, or Network Element Table.
To enable (or switch, if already set) Thematic Maps for the calls or Network Elements:
The calls or Network Elements on the canvas will now be colored by the selected values and the (NE
or Call) legend will show the color table which was used to generate the colors
1. In the Call Table, Network Element Table, or the Top NE Report, find the column marked with
the Thematic Icon.
2. Right-click on that column header and select Set Thematic.
Note: Removing a kpi/attribute from the view will also restore the default coloring.
Note: The Message Viewer is not available for technologies that do not support layer 3 data.
Refer to the NETSCOUT TrueCall System Features Document for more information on viewer
support.
3. The call opens in the Message Viewer window for further analysis.
Clicking on each message returns details in the lower pane of the message viewer.
You can also search within the call using the search field at the top of the viewer. Use the
Export drop-down menu at the top of the message viewer window to export PDU details to
the clipboard or export the entire message to a png file.
