l Layers Drop-Down Menu—Use to set the display properties for the different map elements.

l Bin Size Drop-Down Menu—The Bin Size of a map defines the length of each edge in the
square grid of a map. The default bin size is 200 meters, but you may want to change this
value to be larger for maps that cover a large geographic area.
Note: Smaller bin sizes require more memory when executing a query and can result in
memory allocation errors for large maps. Consider increasing bin size for better performance.
For example, increasing the bin size from 50m to 100m reduces memory required by a factor
of four. Increasing from 50m to 200m reduces memory required by a factor of 16.

Note: If a map type is selected or changed, the map data will be retrieved and displayed on
the canvas automatically, even if the layer is hidden in the Layer Control.

Refer to the Working with Maps for more information about creating and working with maps.

3.5 KPI Explorer Pane

The KPI Explorer provides a high level aggregated count of the most important KPIs for RAN
operations and performance. With the KPI Explorer, users can quickly assess the overall state of the
analyzed region by viewing the most important KPIs in key categories – accessibility, retainability,
quality and mobility.

The KPI Explorer displays the current statistics values based on the configured filter settings

3.6 Report Tables Pane

TrueCall includes a powerful set of pre-defined reports that provide summary data for the most
important network performance metrics and KPIs for the analysis area. Reports are automatically
updated each time a user selects a new set of filters for their analysis.

These are the pre-defined reports:

l Top Network Element — Stack ranked list of network elements based on filter results.
l Top Subscriber — Stack ranked list of subscribers (IMSIs, MSIDN) based on filter results.
l Call Table — Detailed summary metrics of each individual call or connection.
l Network Element Table — A view of the network table that has been uploaded for the system.
l Strip Charts— A historical view of one or more KPIs on a time axis.
l Top Device — A view of the performance of specific devices.

You can export any TrueCall report or KPI as a spreadsheet for further processing.

3.7 Viewing Download Status

While working with TrueCall®, various operations (connecting to a server or changing your filters for
example) will trigger a server query. When this happens, TrueCall provides you with a few different
ways to track the progress of your query so you know approximately how long the query will take to
finish computing and transfer the results to the Client.

In the TrueCall user interface on the right side of the Status Bar, you will see your Download Status.

When you trigger a server query, an estimate of the time remaining will appear in this box. If multiple
queries were made simultaneously (as often is the case), the Download Status Bar will show you the
maximum time remaining of all queries.

To view a more detailed breakdown of each of your current downloads, either:

4 Working with Filters
TrueCall has the capability to add filters for three categories:

l Date/Time Filter – The time filter is defined in the top portion of the Filters pane using the
calendar and time selectors.
l Area Filter – The area filter must be defined on the Map Canvas.
l Attribute Filter – Add specific filters for call attributes.

You can also add specific call attributes to a filter from the report tables.

The Network Elements are referenced in the Network Database View in some Reports, as well as in
calls. TrueCall enables filtering on Network Elements then the Network Element Filter Type can be
added directly from these views.

4.1 Date/Time Filter

Historical Analysis mode allows you to perform analysis on archived network data. Use the Call
Calendar to help you construct the filter. the Call Calendar provides information about the available
data in your network (TrueCall collects data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

Hovering over a specific date on the Call Calendar displays the available hours for that day. If the
available hours are consecutive they are displayed as an inclusive range.

You can use the time entry boxes to enter a specific time range or select All Day to construct a filter
using a full day of data.

Calendar key:

l Green indicates a date for which data is available for the entire day
l Yellow indicates a date for which data is available for some portion of the day (hover over the
date to see the available hours)
l A date with a dot indicates that there was a network update on that date

After adding new filter attributes, click Commit to update the query.

4.3.1 Using Wildcards to Refine Filters

Additionally, you can use wildcards to refine your search. TrueCall supports wildcards for the
following call attributes:

l Dialed/Calling Party Number (ALU CDMA and HUA CDMA only)

l Called Party Number (HUA UMTS only)
l Mobile Number
l IMEI
l IMSI

The following wildcard characters are supported:

l * - matches 0 or more characters

l ? - matches 1 character

You can use more than one wildcard character per search term. Wildcard characters can be
positioned anywhere in the search term.

4.3.2 Filtering from Report Tables

Filter attributes can also be added from the report tables by right-clicking on an attribute value from
a connection and selecting “Add X to Filter” (e.g. Add “OEM Release Cause” to Filter).

In the example below, the user found a connection in the Call Table with a specific OEM Release
cause, RELEASE_DUE_TO_EUTRAN_GENERATED_REASON, of concern. The user then added the OEM
Release Cause attribute with this value to the filter directly from the Call Table.

After adding new filter attributes, click Commit to update the query.

After you add the filter, it displays in the Filter pane along with any other filtering criteria already
selected.

4.3.3 Filtering Using the Map Canvas

Network element elements can also be added from the map canvas by right-clicking the element and
selecting Add to Filter. After adding new filter attributes, click Commit to update the query.

selected.

4.4 Removing Filters

Filter components can be removed individually.  Click on the ‘x’ part of a filter component to remove
it.

After you remove a filter, click Commit to update the query.

4.5 Performance Considerations when Using Filters

To increase query performance, TrueCall has indexed the following commonly-used filters:

TrueCall User Guide 35

© NETSCOUT CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY
Ver. 17.3/6.1.1 | 2018-07-23 4  Working with Filters
992-0629-08 Rev. 005

l RRC end location

l Network Elements
l Device make/model
l IMSI
l RRC end time

TrueCall recommends using these filters alone or in combination with other filter criteria to speed
query response times.

For example, if you create a query for IMSI and you add an IMEI filter, TrueCall performs the indexed
IMSI search first, then performs the slower IMEI search on the subset of data. This returns results
more quickly than if you had only added IMEI and searched in the same time range. The second
search must look at every record for the defined time period, which results in a slower query.

5 Working with Maps
TrueCall provides two map views:

l Event maps show where call events take place.

l Heat maps show event density or the intensity of a KPI in a bin.

The following sections describe event maps and heat maps in more detail and provide procedures
for working with maps.

5.1 Event Map

To create an event map:

1. Select filter criteria, (time, geographic boundary, call attributes).

2. Click Commit. The map generates showing the filtered elements.

Note: If the number of calls that satisfies the filter is too large, you can choose to display a
random subset of the calls by selecting Tools > Options > General and setting the number
of calls to display in the Call Table size field. This only changes the number of calls visible on
the map and in the call table. All computed KPIs in the KPI Explorer are calculated using all
criteria that satisfy the filter.
3. Use the Map Canvas controls to zoom in or out or to set layering and bin sizes for the map.
4. Click on a call to view the serving sectors and to view the call details in the tables

5.2 Heat Maps

Heat Maps show event density or the intensity of a KPI in a geographic bin. Users can easily generate
heat maps and point maps for troubleshooting, optimization, and planning.

Use heat maps to visualize performance such as:

l Voice drops
l Data drops
l Traffic density
l Handovers

You can also use them to visualize and improve performance — correlating low performance to
sectors with high interference or poor coverage.

To create a heat map:

1. Click on the   sign above the map area to choose a map type.

The following sections outline tasks that can be performed on maps.

5.3.1 Viewing the Call Legend

Select Window > Call Legend to open the Call Legend.

l Provides information about the calls on the Canvas

l Fill color combined with outline color
l Easily visualize call types

The Call Legend shows you the coloring scheme of the visual representation of the calls on the
canvas. By default (as shown above), the calls on the canvas are drawn as circles with an outline
mapped to its final disposition (termination) and filled according to the call type (Voice, Data, etc).

The Call Legend also shows the meaning of pilot lines drawn on the canvas when calls are selected.
Available pilot lines vary depending on technology. The following table outlines the differences:

Technology Description
3GPP2 (CDMA/EVDO) Primary and Secondary Pilots
GSM Serving Pilot
LTE Serving Pilot
UMTS Serving Pilot, Active Pilot, Monitored Pilot, Polluter Pilot

5.3.2 Viewing the NE Legend

Select Window > NE Legend to open the NE Legend.

The NE Legend shows you the color scheme of the Network Elements on the Canvas. By default, the

5.3.11 Exporting Maps

You can export heat maps as BIL, PNG, GRD, KMZ, or ASCII text files, for use in an external program
such as Atoll® or MapInfo®. You can export up to 10 maps at one time. To create the same set of
maps on a regular cadence for export into another tool, use the Bookmark feature to automate
creation of the maps.

Comparison and delta maps may not be exported. If a map has been smoothed, the base,
unsmoothed, version is exported.

Export Considerations
l Use BIL format when exporting for use with Atoll.
l Exported BIL maps are compatible with Atoll version 2.5.9 and higher.
l GRD file format export is in Mercator WGS84 [EPSG:3395]. To ensure accurate mapping
display, the correct projection must be chosen when importing into any external programs.
l The UTM Zone shown by default on the Map Export dialog matches the UTM zone of the map
you are exporting. NETSCOUT recommends that you do not change this setting. In most cases,
the same UTM zone should be selected upon import into an external tool, unless the created
map is very close to the edge of another UTM zone or spans in to another UTM zone. In that
case, adjusting the zone may be beneficial.
l Maps may not exceed 3GB. If you receive an error that your map cannot be saved because it is
too large, increase the map bin size or reduce the area of the map.
l NETSCOUT does not recommend exporting maps that span multiple UTM zones, because the
export can become distorted.
l The ASCII export format outputs the center (lat/lon) position for each bin.
l Set PNG/KMZ map resolution for export using Tools > Options > General.

To export a map:

1. Load a map.
2. Select File > Export Map As and select the type of export. The Map Export dialog opens
preselected for the Format Type you just chose.

4. [BIL map export only] Select the Projection type (UTM or Lat Lon).
Note: See Export Considerations.
5. Click the button next to the export location to navigate to the folder for export.

6. Click Save. The file is saved with the name of the map. Subsequent exports of the same map
overwrite the map already saved in that location.
Note: BIL format types are exported as gzip files (.gz extension). You must uncompress the
file before using it.

5.3.12 Using the TrueCall Map Comparison Tools

The map comparison tools provide the ability to compare two maps and compare KPI values within
the KPI Explorer. Additionally, TrueCall can be run in delta mapping mode, which adds delta values to
the KPI Explorer results and displays delta values in the map view. The comparison tools make it
easier to visualize changes in performance for a specific area, help in identifying transient radio
issues, and aid in quickly evaluating network changes.

5.3.12.1 Creating Map Comparison Filters

Note: To view deltas for maps and KPIs, enable that feature in Tools > Options > Show Delta

5.4 Multi-Server Queries

Typically, when you log into a server, you are accessing one market. However, a master server can be
configured to communicate with multiple market-level servers (source servers) to provide querying
capability at a wider level. If you are logged into a master server, when you query, you are querying
all the servers that the master server has been configured to communicate with. Responses from all
the queried servers are aggregated together as one response.

If, when performing analysis aggregated from multiple markets, you want to look more closely at
any one market, you can log into that market's source server to investigate it more closely.

Note the following:

l An error displays if you lose connection to a source server.

l The following are not available when connected to a master server:
o Live Views
o Top Subscriber
o Strip Chart
o Histogram
o Unique IMSI counts
o Automatic overshooting detection

5.5 Querying for Composite Calls

The breadcrumbing feature allows TrueCall to geolocate calls during the call duration and not only at
the end of the call. These composite calls can be queried for by adding a Composite Call filter. The
resulting calls appear in the Call Table. Clicking on a composite call in the Call Table opens its
associated call fragments in the Fragment Table and displays the fragments on the map.

The Geolocation feature is available for LTE and UMTS GeoSoft RAN probe enabled Network
Equipment Vendors (NEV).

6.14 Drilling Down to ISA

Note: This feature requires an API license for Iris. Contact your system administrator to
configure the ISA drill-down capability in TrueCall. If using TrueCall within an IPv6 network, the Iris
system being connected to must also use IPv6. This feature is available where TrueCall is fed by
GeoSoft RAN.

You may encounter call records or subscribers that indicate problems within the core network. You
can launch ISA from TrueCall to perform in-depth root cause analysis of call records or of specific
subscribers. You can drill to ISA for

l Call Records—Up to 10 at a time, selected on the Call Table.

l Specific IMSI—Selected on either the Call Table or Top Subscriber Report.
Note: For LTE vendors where IMSI is normally extracted from Diameter or CTUM (ERC LTE,
HUA LTE, NSN LTE, ZTE LTE), drill down by IMSI requires a G10 or Core probe that monitors S1-
AP and S6a and that appropriate configuration has been performed in ISA. Contact your
NETSCOUT representative for more information.

To drill to ISA:

1. Commit a query.
2. Open either the Call Table or Top Subscriber Report.
3. Right-click on an entry or select up to 10 calls on the Call Table.
4. Select either Analyze Selected Calls in ISA or Analyze <IMSI> in ISA.

6.15 Using Thematic Maps

Thematic Maps provides you with a graphical visualization of your dataset. When set, it generates a
color table for a set of values (either KPI or attribute values) and colors the canvas representation
accordingly.

By default, the calls plotted on the canvas are plotted as circles with an outline mapped to its final
disposition (termination) and filled according to the call type (Voice, Data, etc) - see also Customizing
the Map Legend. This functionality is overridden by Thematic Maps, removing the outline color and
filling the calls with a color generated from the values of the field set to thematic. Thematic maps can
be set from the Call Table, Top NE Table, or Network Element Table.

To enable (or switch, if already set) Thematic Maps for the calls or Network Elements:

1. Open the Call Table, Top NE Table, or Network Element Table.

2. Right-click on the column header for the attribute/kpi you wish to visualize.
3. Select Set Thematic.

The calls or Network Elements on the canvas will now be colored by the selected values and the (NE
or Call) legend will show the color table which was used to generate the colors

Note: Not all fields are available to be set as a Thematic.

To disable Thematic coloring:
