The main objective of this assessment task is to assess the skill set of the student on how will they apply concepts of
structural analysis in the field of structural engineering. The project will be a proposed 3-storey school building to be
analyzed based on the National Structural Code of the Philippines 2010 Edition. The proposed building is located in
Davao City with a distance of 10 km from the nearest fault line. A typical plan view of the structure is shown.
The ground floor is 3.6 m high, while 2 nd and 3rd floor is 3.0 m high. As shown in the figure below. Architectural
specifications and finishes are as follows:
Ground floor to 3rd floor ceiling – 8 mm thick gypsum board w/ suspended steel channel system
Hallway floor finish – cement finish (25 mm thick) on stone concrete fill
Classroom floor finish – ceramic tile on 1-inch-thick mortar bed
Roof deck covering – water proofing bituminous with gravel cover
Outer walls – 150 mm thick masonry wall with plaster in both sides
Inner walls – 100 mm thick masonry wall with plaster in both sides
Height of walls is from finish floor line to bottom of girder except for hallways and roof deck which is 1.2 m long
Use the floor framing plan in the figure below. Assume the following dimensions for the structural elements:
Columns – 400 mm x 400 mm from foundation to 2nd Floor, 300 mm x 300 mm from 3rd floor to roof deck
Girders – 500 mm x 350 mm
Floor beams – 400 mm x 300 mm
Roof beams – 350 mm x 250 mm
2nd and 3rd floor slabs, landing and stairs – 125 mm thick
Roof deck slabs – 100 mm thick

Assuming fixed supports at the base of the column, students are required to calculate the internal forces and draw the
internal force diagrams for all possible load cases for all the members in the structure (girder/beams and columns) due
to all applied dead, live, roof live, wind and earthquake loads (static procedure). All detailed calculations and drawings
must be included in the report. The final report must be prepared professionally.
