A. Search Engines is a program that finds web sites and web pages. They are particularly helpful in locating
web pages about certain topics or I locating specific web pages for which you do not know the exact web
address.
B. Two Categories of Search Engines:
1. Directories- such as About.com and Yahoo, are good at identifying general information
2. Indexes- like Alta Vista and Google, find individual pages of a web site that match your
keywords.
C. Advanced Web Searching
1. Capitalization- most search engines are NOT case sensitive
2. Phrase Searching- enclose the words in quotation marks (“ “) so that the search engine will
return only documents containing whether a statement is true or false; most common
operators are AND, OR and NOT
the exact phrase
3. Asterisks (*)- use the root pat of the word and abbreviate it with asterisk. The engine will
return the links to documents containing the word
4. Boolean Operators- to determine
