PUMP SIZING CALCULATION METHODOLOGY
1 AIM
The standard calculation CALC-015 spreadsheet allows sizing of centrifugal, rotary and reciprocating pumps.
2 BASIS / GUIDANCE NOTES
- For calculation of the net positive suction head available (NPSHA), the maximum operating temperature should be used a
maximum vapour pressure for fluids not already at their boiling point.
- A reasonable design margin (10 to 20%) should be provided to required flowrate. Consult client specifications for typical
- The pump suction head, NPSHA and the pump discharge head should be referenced to the shaft centreline for horizonta
nozzle centreline for vertical in-line pumps and the top of the foundation for vertically suspended pumps.
- For reciprocating pumps the acceleration head is calculated using the C factor based on the pump types provided in Appe
[Ref 1]. Fluid compressibility factors (K) provided in [Ref 2] are similar to those provided in API STD 674 [Ref 1] but cover
services and are therefore used. Selection of the pump type in spreadsheet is just to allow these factors to be selected as
acceleration head calculation.
- In order to calculate the acceleration head on the pump suction for reciprocating pumps, the spreadsheet allows for up to
diameters in series on the pump suction.
- Acceleration head is only applicable for reciprocating pumps and not for centrifugal or rotary pumps.
- The spreadsheet allows for specification of a suitable design margin to be applied to the NPSHA.
3 METHOD
1. Enter the pump tag number and service description e.g. Water Injection Booster Pump.
2. Select which units are to be used (SI or Imperial). Note: If the unit set is changed the user will need to manually conve
3. Select the pump type from the drop down list.
4. Select the most appropriate fluid from the drop down list. The fluid compressibility is highest for hydrocarbons, lower fo
water and lower still for deaerated water.
5. Provide the fluid description e.g. deaerated seawater.
6. Enter the fluid temperature for the pump design case.
7. Enter the fluid viscosity and density for the pump design case.
8. The maximum pump operating temperature and the associated fluid vapour pressure shall be entered.
9. Enter the required pump flow rate for the pump design case. The requirement for a design margin on the pump flow ra
basis. Clients may have guidance on typical design margins.
10. For reciprocating pumps the pump speed shall be provided. Consult the Mechanical department with regards the pum
11. For reciprocating pumps enter the suction line straight line length (not the equivalent length) and diameter.
12. Provide the suction vessel operating pressure or upstream booster pump discharge pressure where the pump is supp
pump and not from a vessel. Where the suction pressure is not fixed the minimum operating pressure shall be considere

liquid level in the suction vessel is above the pump reference elevation then the elevation difference will be a positive num
level in the suction vessel is below the pump elevation then the elevation difference will be a negative number. The liquid
vessel shall be assumed to be at its low level trip setting.
15. Enter the suction line pressure drop due to frictional losses in the piping and fittings but not including elevation differe
losses should be based on the pump design flow rate including any design margin applied. The engineer should ensure
considered including pump suction strainers where provided.
16. Provide the design margin to be applied for the NPSHA calculation.
17. Enter the discharge line pressure drop due to frictional losses in the piping and fittings but not including elevation diffe
losses should be based on the pump design flow rate including any design margin applied. The engineer should ensure
considered including check valves and filters where provided.

liquid level in the suction vessel is above the pump reference elevation then the elevation difference will be a positive num

18. Provide the discharge vessel operating pressure or downstream pump suction pressure where the pump is a booster
downstream pump and not a vessel. Where the discharge pressure is not fixed the maximum operating pressure or max
(e.g. pressure setting for control valve to flare) where applicable shall be considered for pump design.
19. Provide the elevation difference between the pump reference elevation and the liquid level in the discharge vessel or
downstream vessel if the liquid enters the vessel above the liquid level. If the liquid level in the discharge vessel is above
elevation then the elevation difference will be a positive number and if the liquid level in the discharge vessel is below the
elevation then the elevation difference will be a negative number.
20. Enter the estimated pump efficiency.
