GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Is there a limit in the number of hanging masses that may be used to KTRATC? Explain.
There is no limit number of hanging masses that may be used to KTRATC as long as the sum of all
forces in the hanging masses will not be greater than the hanging mass 1 (constant) which is the
equilibrant. But doing so, it may increase the chances of errors and discrepancies on the data since there
is a friction force present between the string and the pulley which is not included in the calculations of net
force.
2. How were the graphical technique and the analytical technique related? Which is more accurate?
Using an analytical technique in computing vectors also parts of the graphical technique whereas,
vectors are represented by arrows for its direction and easy visualization. However, analytical method do
not use any measuring device such as ruler and protractor which are applied when graphical techniques
are performed. On the other hand, based on accuracy, analytical method is more accurate because it is
only limited by the physical quantities which are already known. Since in graphical technique, the
illustrations is dependent on the person performing the calculation hence, there are many factors such as
plotting the data may be a source of an error.
3. Based on the experiment, why is hanging mass 1 considered the equilibrant?
Equilibrant is the vector in which it has the same magnitude but opposite direction to the resultant
vector. In the experiment, hanging mass 1 is considered as the equilibrant because other hanging masses
added on the first table is balanced by it. Since it is balance, the sum of all the vectors are zero in which
the resultant of any added magnitude is equal to the magnitude of the hanging mass 1 and the direction
is also opposite.
4. Throughout this experiment, we have used the units “grams” to express the magnitude of the
forces acting, and yet we know grams measure mass and not force. How can we be sure that the
law of vector addition is being validly tested?
Based on the formula, F= ma where F is the force vector, m is the mass and a is the acceleration
due to gravity which is 9.8 m/s2. Since all hanging masses have the same value of a due to all hanging
masses will produce a tension force in each string. The masses are directly proportional to the gravitational
force, while the tension force is equal with the gravitational force. Hence, the magnitude of force considered
is only the mass. Thus the law of vector addition is still can be derived and validly tested.
5. When the ring is at the center, what is observed when one of the hanging masses is disturbed?
It can be observed that ring moved out of the center and would not be in the equilibrium again.
This is due to the disturbed hanging masses which results to unbalanced forced acting on the ring.
