SAS - Planet Tests

SAS.Planet can be used as a substitute for Google Earth for defining paths and polygons to extract earth tiles in FSEarthTiles. SAS.Planet shows more up-to-date data than Google Earth for some airports. Paths and polygons can be exported from SAS.Planet as KML files and used in FSEarthTiles to generate area masks for tile extraction. While Google Earth allows editing paths and polygons, this capability is not obvious or easy to use.

SAS.

Planet as substitute for GoogleEarth for FSEarthTiles

During the weekend I have been experimenting if SAS.Planet can also be used for
FSEarthTiles. My assumptions have been positively proved that it can even be better
used than GoogleEarth. The reasons are the following:

GoogleEarth shows only Google Earth Service data and that is most of the time not
current. I.e. 7AK(PAUT) Akutan Airport on Akun Island in the Aleuts

is not even shown in GoogleEarth. 7AK(PAUT) Akutan was opened in 2012.


VirtualEarth shows it correctly:

Another example is PAAK Atka Airport also in the Aleut.

The Airport at PAAK Atka was in 2007-2008 reconstructed by extending the Runway
to 4500 Ft (5000 Ft with the Overruns). Also the width of the Runway was extended
to 100 Ft. This is not shown on GoogleEarth. VirtualEarth shows it correctly:

GoogleEarth does not provide a method to edit paths and polygon's defined by the
user and stored in “MyPlaces” whereas SAS.Planet allows to edit at anytime the
paths and polygons.1

SAS.Planet has the capability to define many Earth service providers, also from
Russia and many others.

I am currently working on the above mentioned Airports and so I have experimented


with PAAK Atka. The following picture shows the defined paths and polygons in
SAS.Planet:

This is not correct, but it is not so obvious. I will document this possibility later in this document!

To export the paths and polygons, the “Placemark Manager” is opened from the
Menu bar:

The Menu bar also contains the tools to define paths and polygons beside of a lot
other functions. Selecting the “Placemark Manager” will open the following dialog
window:

Here you need to do some experimenting for the selection and exporting!

Make sure you name the file to be exported “AreaKML.kml” and that the file-type is
of: Google KML file (*.kml)

Place this file in your FSEarthTiles work subdirectory.

Now you can start FSEarthTiles and select this newly created KML-file or, if
FSEarthTiles is already active, drag this file onto FSEarthTiles. You will or should get
the following window presented:

You are now ready for getting the Earth Tiles by following the FSEarthTiles manual.
You will or should get at the end of the process an Area mask with the following
results:

Keep on experimenting with SAS.Planet and FSEarthTiles.

What is said here pertaining to SAS.Planet is also valid for any GIS-system
(Global Mapper, QGIS, GRASS, ArcGIS) which is capable to output Google KML
conform data, be it Path’s or Polygon’s that's important to know. I would like
to point this out here!

How to edit Path’s and Polygon’s in GoogleEarth


GoogleEarth has the capability to edit path’s and polygon’s but this was not so
obvious for me and some more users as I recognized. Therefore I will give short
introduction how to do this!

When you have started GoogleEarth you will find “My Places” on the left side of the
opened window.

Doubleclick on the required path or polygon you want to change so GoogleEarth


positions to that location. Than right mouseclick on the path or polygon you just
doubleclicked. Select now “Properties”:

The Properties dialog will pop-up:

Drag this dialog to the left side of the screen, or any other position at your
convenience, and ready you are for editing the path or polygon:

The recticle is used to add, remove or move a point, to delete a point, you need to
press the Del-key on the keyboard.
