1. INTRODUCTION

The following procedures are written for demonstrating the main

protection functions of the P220 relay using an Omicron test set or
similar. This document is not meant to be a complete commissioning
procedure but could be referred to when performing commissioning
tests in association with the commissioning section of the service
manual.
The test configuration is based on a standard relay to test set
connections and initial (mostly default) P220 settings. The procedures
will state if a deviation from the standard connections or initial settings
is required for testing a particular function. For specific on site
applications only enabled functions would be tested using application
specific settings. For testing the protection features please enable one
protection feature at time & disable other protection features to avoid
confusion .

Important :

The testing engineer should familiarize himself with menu

navigation, setting change etc. from front panel as well as
MiCOM S1. Please refer to relevant sections in the TECHNICAL
MANUAL.

2. EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED

3.2. P220 INITIAL SETTINGS

Load default settings into relay from either MiCOM S1 .By default, the
frequency is set to 50 Hz. Change this to 60 Hz, if required. From – 50
Hz or 60 Hz)

4. PRODUCT CHECKS

4.1 POWER UP TESTS

After auxiliary voltage is applied, check that LED indicators for “Healthy
light up. After approx. 2-10 seconds the P220 is ready for operation.

4.2 INPUT OPTO-ISOLATORS

 Page 4 of 8

Check all the Opto inputs by applying the required field voltage and
see the status of all the inputs in the menu Op Parameter.

During testing please make the Opto input 1 High. Opto input 1 is
dedicated for 52 A contact in this relay .

4.1. THERMAL PROTECTION CHECK

Relay Opt. Time (t) = T * ln ( K2 - I ) /(K2 –1) )

Where T=Thermal time constant value in seconds

K= Ratio of Ieq/I theta
I eq = equivalent thermal current Value
I theta= thermal over load current threshold
I = Initial Thermal state of the motor

Now I eq 2= (I +ve) 2
+ Ke ( I -ve)2

Where Ke can be set from 0 to 10

Now for single phase testing say if Ke is 3 then

Ieq= 0.667 I

Now for three phase injection I eq= I

For example Say Ke =3 , In = 1 A ,Ith set = 1* In = 1

 Page 5 of 8

3.9 A 2.6 A 1 9.6 sec

3.9 A 2.6 A 5 48 sec

Similarly we can check for the times in other thermal time constant
setting s.

5.2 E/F PROTECTION – Set the Pick up value & time value then
inject the required current in E/F terminal ( 55,56 for 1A & 47,48 for
5 A ) and check the operation of the relay after the set time delay .

E/F Protection

E/F Set Pick Time Actual Indicati Relay

t In Sec
0.1 A 0.1 A

5.3Unbalance Protection /negative phase sequence : Two stages

of unbalance protections are available . 1st stage is D.M.T. & 2nd stage
will operate according to this formula.

Operating time ( t ) = 1.2/( I –ve/ I threshold)

Reminder : Micom P220 relay calculates the negative phase sequence

component using the formula

I2 = 1/3 (Ia + a2 Ib + a Ic )

Where a = Cos (2/3) + j Sin (2/3)

Now if we are injecting current in A phase then

I2 = 1/3 Ia
Testing format will be like this

5.4 Phase Over Current : This feature will follow DMT curve .
Set the O/C threshold & time delay. Now inject the current in each
phase and check the operation .
Testing format will be like this

1.5 A 2 A OK OK

5.5 Block Rotor Protection :- : This feature will follow DMT

curve . Set the block rotor threshold current value & block rotor time
delay. Now inject current slightly more than the block rotor threshold
in each phase and check the operation of the relay .

Testing format will be like this

Block Rotor Protection:

5.6 Excess long start : Set the excess long start current value &
excess long start time delay. Now inject current slightly more than the
excess long start threshold in each phase and check the operation of
the relay. Relay should operate after the set time delay.

Testing format will be like this

Excess Long Start Protection: ( Start Detection 52a + I )

4.2. TOO MANY START & TIME BETWEEN TWO STARTS :

Set the No. of Hot and cold start in the automatic control menu of the
relay . Now programme one output relay ( say out put relay 4 for
example )for this protection.

Now set the time between two starts if you want to use this
protection and programme the same out put relay ( say out put relay
4 for example ) .

Now use the normally closed contact of the said output relay in the
closing circuit of the breaker/ contactor.

5. ON LOAD TESTS

The purpose of the on-load checks are to:

Confirm the external wiring to the current inputs are correct.

The Motor needs to be energised for these checks. With the motor
supplying load current check that the relay measurements are as
expected.
