Unit II: Time Response Analysis


1. The closed loop transfer function of a certain system is given as 𝑇(𝑠) = 10/(𝑠 2 + 10𝑠 +
25). What is the output, when the input is a step of height 5 unit?
2. The closed loop transfer function of a certain system is given as 𝐹(𝑠) = 160/(𝑠 2 + 8𝑠 +
16). Find its impulse response.
3. What is the effect of increasing the undamped frequency of oscillation on rise time, settling
time and the time at which maximum overshoot occurs.
4. The % maximum overshoot is 10% and the settling time for 2% tolerance is 0.5sec.
Determine the transfer function of the second order system.
5. The settling time is 0.6 sec for 2% tolerance and the time at which maximum overshoot
occur is 0.5 sec. Determine the transfer function of the second order system.
6. Determine the type and the static error coefficient of the negative feedback system with
𝐺(𝑠) = 1/(𝑠 + 0.8) and 𝐻(𝑠) = 1/(𝑠 + 2.5).

this value of K, determine settling time, Peak overshoot and time to Peak overshoot for a
unit-step input.
11. For a second order system with n =10 rad/sec, ζ= 0.8 and tolerance as 5%, determine the
following for unit step input: (a) rise time (b) peak time (c) peak overshoot (d) settling time
and (d) number of oscillations before settling.
12. The open loop transfer function of a unity feedback system is given by G(s) = K/s(Ts + 1),
where K and T are positive constants. By what factor should the amplifier gain be reduced so
that the peak overshoot of unit step response of the system reduced from 75% to 25%.
13. For the system shown below, determine the value of Ke so that the damping ration is 0.5.
Determine the values of settling time, Peak overshoot and time to Peak overshoot for a unit-
step input.

acceleration inputs. Also determine the damping ratio and natural frequency of the
dominant roots.
15. A system has 40% overshoot and requires a settling time of 4secs when given a step input.
The steady state error is 2%. Determine the transfer function of the second order system.
Also find rise time and peak time.
16. The open loop transfer function of a unity feedback system is given by G(s) = K/s(Ts + 1),
where K and T are positive constants. For the system overshoot of the unit step response to
𝑇𝐾 −1
reduce from 60% to 20%, show that 𝑇𝐾1 −1 = 43.22, where K1 and K2 are the values of K for

60% and 20% overshoot respectively.
17. For the system given below compute the values of Kc and Td so that the characteristic
equation of the closed loop system will have roots at -1± j1.732.

loop transfer function of the system? Also determine the undamped natural frequency and
damping ration.
19. Refer to the figure given below, find the following:

(ii) Ζ, n, % Mp, Tpeak and Tsettling

20. For the system having G(s) = 15/(s + 1)(s + 3), H(s)=1, determine (i) characteristic
equation (ii) time at which 1st undershoot will occur (iii) Time period of oscillations and (iv)
number of cycles output will perform before settling down.
21. Derive the expression of step response of standard second order system.
22. Find the static error coefficients for a system whose G(s)H(s) = 10/s(2s + 1)(s + 1). Also
find steady state error for r(t)=1+ t + t2/2.
23. For a unity feedback control system the open loop transfer function G(s) = 10(s +
2)/s2 (s + 1). Find (a) position, velocity and acceleration error constants. (b) The steady
state error when the input is R(S) where𝑅(𝑠) = 3⁄𝑠 − 2⁄𝑠 2 + 1⁄3𝑠 3 .
