Modern Digital Electronics Tutorial

This document contains a tutorial for PHYS 3203 with 5 questions about memory addressing, access rates, RAM design, and charge coupled devices (CCDs). Students are asked to determine memory addressing for 64, 1K, and 1M words of storage, calculate maximum access rates for memory with 300ns access and 580ns cycle times, calculate RAM chip requirements to build various RAM blocks, design a 4x3 bit RAM using flip-flops and gates, and explain the structure and applications of CCDs. The tutorial is worth 10 marks and is due on February 10th, 2020.

PHYS 3203

Tutorial # 1

Due Date – 10th Feb. 2020 Marks - 10

1. Find the number of pins required for addressing and the address range in binary format for a
memory with following M words storage:

(i) 64 (ii) 1K (iii) 1M

Also express the address range in hexadecimal and octal format.

2. Determine the maximum rate (words/sec) at which data can be accessed from a memory with
access time 300ns and cycle time 580ns.

3. Find the number of 1024 x 4 bit static RAM (Intel 2142) and other ICs required to obtain
followings:

(i) 4096 x 4 bit RAM

(ii) 1024 x 8 bit RAM
(ii) 16K bytes of RAM

4. Design a 4 × 3 bit random access memory (RAM) having binary cells comprising flip-flops and
gates.

5. Explain structure and operation of charge coupled devices (CCDs). Write down some applications
of CCDs.
