OVERVIEW OF WORLD MARKET

Honda is the largest motorcycle manufacturer in japan and has been

since its started production in 1955. At its peak in 1982, Honda
manufactured almost 3 million motorcycles annually. By 2006 this
figure had reduced to around 550000 but was still higher than its three
domestic competitors.
During 1960s, when it was a small manufacturer, Honda broke out of
the Japanese motorcycle market and began exporting to the U.S.
working with the advertising agency Grey advertising, Honda created
and innovative marketing campaign, using the slogan “You meet the
nicest people on a Honda “ In contrast to the prevailing negative
stereotypes of motorcyclist in America as tough, antisocial rebels, this
campaign suggested that Honda motorcycles were made for the
everyman. The campaign was hugely successful; the ads ran for three
years, and by the end of 1963 alone, Honda had sold 90000
motorcycles.
Taking Honda’s story as an archetype of the smaller manufacturer
entering a new market already occupied by highly dominant
competitors, this story of their market entry, and their subsequent huge
success in the U.S. and around the world, has been the subject of some
academic controversy. Competing explanations have been advanced to
explain Honda’s strategy and the reasons for their success.
The first of these explanations was put forward when, in 1975, Boston
Consulting Group (BCG) was commissioned by the UK government to
write a report explaining why and how the British motorcycle industry
had been out-competed by it’s Japanese Competitors. The report
concluded that the Japanese firms, including Honda, had sought a very
high scale of production in order to benefit from economies of scale
and learning curve effects. It blamed the decline of the British
motorcycle industry on the failure of British managers to invest enough
in their businesses to profit from economies of scale and scope.

CONCLUSION

Back in 2001, when Honda launched the Dio in the Indian market,
everybody stood up and took notice. With its low slung unique design,
fixed headlamp and catchy graphic schemes, it turned heads, wherever
it went. The sufficient 102cc engine kept the commuters happy and the
Dio was an instant hit with the young brigade. The fibre body and trusty
Dio engine helped it in becoming one of the leading scooters in India.
But recently, with the entry of newer scooters in the market, for
example the TVS Wego, Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India
(HMSI) did feel the need to re-vamp the ever popular Dio. Also, the
other two scooters from their stable, the Activa and Aviator, were
benefitting from their upgrades. So after many speculations, HMSI
launched the all new Dio at the 2012 Auto Expo in January.
Dio has 110cc powerful engine and offers 15% more fuel economy. It
has tubeless tyres - First in category and Combi-Brakes - Exclusively
in Honda scooters.” The Dio is one of those vehicles, which could sell
in high numbers even without having any major upgrade. But HMSI
has gone in the right direction by providing the upgrades and narrowing
down the competition. Following its 'Moto-scooter' legacy, the Dio is
still one of the best scooters available in the market today. The new
Honda Dio is being sold across all Honda Exclusive Authorized
Dealerships (HEADs) and is priced at Rs. 42,362 (Ex-Showroom,
Delhi), making it shattering value for money!
