Assign 1

This document provides the details of Assignment 1 for the PHY-101 Mechanics & Thermodynamics course to be submitted by February 7th, 2020. It includes 6 problems related to mechanics, thermodynamics, kinematics and dynamics. Students are asked to calculate things like the total distance a bird travels between two trains, average and instantaneous velocities of a moving particle, the speed and deceleration of Ironman as he falls and is caught by Hulk, and the speed, range and time of flight for a ball shot at different angles.

PHY-101 Mechanics & Thermodynamics Spring 2020

Assignment 1, Due date: 6:00 PM, 7th February 2020

Both sections should deposit their assignments at Dr. Abdullah Khalid’s office (C-115).

Total marks: 23

1. (3 marks) Two trains, each having a speed of 20 km/h, are headed at each other on the same straight

track. A bird that can fly 40 km/h flies off the front of one train when they are 40 km apart and

heads directly for the other train. On reaching the other train, the bird flies directly back to the

first train, and so forth. (We have no idea why a bird would behave in this way.) What is the total

distance the bird travels before the trains collide?

2. (5 marks) The position of a particle moving along the x axis is given in centimeters by x(t) =

8.75 + 2.50t3 , where t is in seconds.

(a) Caculate the average velocity during the time interval t = 2.00 s to t = 3.00 s.

(b) Calculate the instantaneous velocity at t = 2.00 s.

(c) Calculate the instantaneous velocity at t = 3.00 s.

(d) Calculate the instantaneous velocity at t = 2.50 s.

(e) Calculate the instantaneous velocity when the particle is midway between its positions at t =

2.00 s and t = 3.00 s.

(f) Graph x versus t and indicate your answers to (a)-(e) graphically.

3. (3 marks) Watch this video clip in which Ironman saves the day:

Ironman begins falling at the 45 s into the video clip. Suppose that he falls with an acceleration of

9.81 m/s2 . Hulk catches him at the 1 minute 53 seconds into the video clip.

(a) What was Ironman’s speed when Hulk caught him? Neglect air resistance.

(b) How much distance had Ironman fallen when Hulk caught him?

(c) Suppose, the Hulk catches Ironman on the 30th floor (each floor is about 3 meter high), and

they continously decelerate till they hits the ground at 20 m/s. What was the deceleration that

Hulk imparted?

4. (4 marks) The position r of a particle moving in an xy plane is given by ~r = (2.00t3 − 5.00t)î +

(6.00 − 7.00t4 )ĵ , with r in meters and t in seconds. In unit-vector notation:

(a) Calculate ~r for t = 2.00 s,

(b) Calculate ~v for t = 2.00 s,

(c) Calculate ~a for t = 2.00 s.

(d) What is the angle between the positive direction of the x axis and a line tangent to the particle’s

path at t = 2.00 s?

5. (3 marks) The Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite moves in a circular orbit 700 km above Earth’s

surface with a period of 99.31 min. What are the (a) speed and (b) magnitude of the centripetal

acceleration of the satellite?

6. (5 marks) A ball is to be shot from level ground with a certain speed v0 and some angle θ. Changing

the value of θ changes the range and the flight time.

(a) For what value of θ is the range maximum?

(b) For this value of θ, what is the time of flight? Call this the tmax .

(c) Find the angle such that the flight time is tmax /2.

(d) For this choice of angle, what is the least speed of the ball during its motion? Express your

answer in terms of the unknown v0 .
