GSB shall be prepared in an approved mixing plant of suitable capacity having provision for controlled
addition of water and forced mixing arrangement. While adding water due allowance should be made for
evaporation losses. At the time of compaction, water in Mix should not vary from Optimum value by more
than agreed limits. Mix material should be uniformly wet and no segregation should be permitted.
Immediately after mixing, aggregates shall be spread uniformly & evenly upon the prepared sub grade in
required quantities. In no case should they be dumped in heaps directly on the area where these are to be
laid nor shall their hauling over a partly completed stretch be permitted. Manual mixing shall be permitted
only where width of laying is not adequate for mechanical operations.
After the mix has been laid to the required thickness, grade and cross fall, the same shall be uniformly
compacted to the full depth with suitable roller. The speed of roller shall not exceed 5 km/hour. Rolling shall
be continued till the density achieved is at least 98 % of the MDD for the material as determined by the
method outlined in IS : 2720 (P-8). After final compaction of Granular sub base course, the road shall be
allowed to dry for 24 hours.
The G.S.B shall be laid (in one or more in layers as lower and upper sub-base) over the prepared or finished
Sub-grade shall be prepared by removing all vegetation and other extraneous matter, lightly sprinkled with
water if necessary and rolled with two passes of 80-100 KN smooth wheeled roller.
G.S.B material shall be spread ion sub-grade with the help of motor grader. When G.S.B material consist of
combination of material at that time mixing shall be done mechanically by the mix-in-place method
(Equipment used of this method is Rotavator). Manual mixing permitted in such circumstances only. If
moisture content is less then add some part of water and then mix uniformly.
Immediately, thereafter rolling shall start. If thickness of compacted layer <100 mm the rolling can be done by
smooth wheel roller of 80-100 KN weight. But if single layer up to 225 mm the rolling can be done with the
help of vibratory roller of minimum 80-100 KN static weight or heavy pneumatic tyred rolled of minimum
200-300 KN weight.
The speed of roller shall not exceed 5 Km per hour. Each pass of the roller shall uniformly overlap not less
than 1/3 of the track made. During rolling grade & camber shall be checked. The passes of roller shall be done
from edge to camber. Rolling shall be continued till the density achieved is at least 98% of M.D.D for the
material.
