Title Basic Concepts and Nature of Assessment

Target Participants Block A Earning Units

Link to the Previous Session/Topic The session on Basic Concepts and Nature of Assessment dwells on the terminologies used in the duration of
the course. Each term is being defined and explained thoroughly. The nature of assessment will make the
students aware of the real essence of assessment to provide information to the teachers for the modification
of the teaching-learning process to attain the set learning standards. This session on Basic Concepts and
Nature of Assessment will be the eye opener and leads the students to better understand the course.

Link to the Next Session/Topic The session on principles of high quality assessment discusses how the properties of the test and the
assessment principles affect the design, administration and usability of the test based on the purpose of
assessment in the classroom.

How does this contribute to the This session provides the Assessment Students with a core understanding of the nature and principles of
program outcomes? assessment of student learning and its relation to the teaching profession. This should enable the education
students to be familiarized with varied and appropriate assessment tools and use the results of assessment to
improve instruction and to guide decisions on promotion and retention.

Learning Objectives At the end of the session, the participants will be able to :

1. express ideas on the basic concepts of assessment, evaluation, measurement, testing, test, & non-test.
2. explain the nature of assessment.

Key Understandings  The basic concepts in assessment clarify the similarities and difference of assessment and evaluation.
 Assessment is integral in the education system.
 The purpose of assessment will determine the type of assessment to be given to the learners
 Assessment results should be used to inform instructional decisions as well as decisions pertaining to
learner action such as promotion and retention
