Autobiography
Mackenzie Correll
Ever since I can remember I wanted to become a teacher. Whenever asked “what do you want
to be when you grow up?” I always replied with “a teacher.” It hasn’t changed since then either. As I’ve
gotten older and gotten to work with different ages, I have found that I really enjoy working with the
younger ages. This has made my teacher dream become an elementary school teacher dream.
My mom is a 5th grade teacher and I always wanted to be like her. As a child I went to an in-
home daycare. My daycare providers name was Cindy and she was like a second mother to me. As I
became a bigger kid, she would let me help her with the younger kids. After I started school, I would get
off the bus at my grandmas which was about a mile away from Cindy’s. Everyday after I got off the bus, I
would call Cindy and ask if I could come there that day and if she didn’t have too many kids I got to go
and play with the little kids. Growing up I also had a lot of younger second cousins. I loved going to
family events because I got to help take care of all the little kids. When I got old enough to babysit alone,
I was always the first one they called because they knew I would always want to babysit. My mom
taught in a different district then the school I went to when I was in elementary school, so the days I
didn’t have school and she did I would always go hangout in her class. In middle school I moved to her
district and got off the bus at her school every day. She worked after school program, so I would help
with the kids during that time. Once I got into high school I went back to my old district. When I didn’t
have school, I would drive to her school and help with kids who were behind and needed extra help. In
high school I was a helper in a 4th grade and 4-K class for part of my school day. While working in the 4-K
class I knew for sure that I wanted to go into education. It was the favorite part of my day! In high school
I was also very involved with helping with youth sports. I coached 5th grade hoop league and reffed my
freshmen through senior year. Along with that I helped at all the youth basketball and softball camps
over the summer. During my first semester in college, I didn’t have school every day so in my free time I
would go help in my mom’s class and work with kids in the after-school program. In October, I began to
work at Heart of the North Learning Center. I worked between the two and three-year-old group and in
the baby room. I really enjoyed being with both age groups but liked the older group better. At first, I
started as an assistant with the two and threes and now I am the lead teacher. I love going to work and
the days I don’t work I miss being with all my kids. I am also coaching youth basketball still as the 5th
grade travel team coach. After finishing the Early Childhood Education Program at WITC, I will transfer to
UWS to get my Elementary Education degree.
