A LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

Grade 6

I. Objectives:
Through the given examples and activities, the Grade 6 students with at least 80% of
accuracy are expected to:
a. identify the slope-intercept of a line from the standard form;
b. determine the slope and the y-intercept of a line;
c. write equations in slope-intercept form using the given slope and y-intercept; and
d. change the equations from standard into slope-intercept form.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Activities on the Use of Slope-Intercept Form
Concept: A linear equation in two variables written in the form of y = mx + b is said to
be in slope-intercept form.

III. Procedure
After the routine activity, the teacher will have a recall activity about the previous topic,
slope intercept form of a line. The teacher will let the students determine if the equations are in
the standard form or in slope-intercept form.
The equations are as follows:
1. 2y = 4x – 1 6. y + 4x = 5
2. y + 1 = 2x 7. y = 6x – 7
3. y = -2x + 9 8. y = 2x + 3
4. y = -x + 10 9. y = x – 23

5. y = 3x – 5 10. y =

The teacher will give more examples on determining the slope and y-intercept of an
equation and will let the students practice on the remaining equations.
The equations are as follows:

1. y = 3x – 5 6. y =

2. y = 2x + 7 7. y =

3. y = -4x + 2 8. y =

4. y = -5x – 1 9. y = 2x + 3
5. y = 3x 10. y = x – 4

After the practice, the teacher will then show how to write equations in the slope-
intercept form given its slope and y – intercept.
Illustrative Examples:
1. Given:
Slope =
Y – intercept = 3
Answer: Substitute for m and 3 for b.

y = mx + b

y= x+3
2. Given:

Slope =

Y – intercept = 2

Answer: Substitute for m and 2 for b.

y = mx + b

y= x+2
Practice:

1. Slope: 5 Y – intercept: - Answer: y = 5x -

2. Slope: 0 Y – intercept: 1 Answer: y = 1

3. Slope: Y – intercept: 3 Answer: y = +3

4. Slope: Y – intercept: 0 Answer: y = x

5. Slope: Y – intercept: -5 Answer: y = -5

After the practice, the teacher will then show how to change equations from the standard
form to the slope-intercept form.
Illustrative Examples:
1. 10x + 5y + 3 = 0 2. 3y – 9 = x
Answer: Answer:
Step 1: 5y = 10x + 3 Step 1:3y = x + 9

Step 2: Step 2:

Step 3: y = 2x + Step 3: +3
Practice:

1.x + 2y – 1 = 0 Answer:

2.2x = y + 7 Answer:

3. x – 4y – 2 = 0 Answer:

4. 8x – 5y = -2 Answer:

IV. EVALUATION:
Change the following equations into (a) slope-intercept form and then find the (b)
slope and (c) y-intercept afterwards.

1.3x + 15y = 4 Answer: a: y = ;b: ; c:

2. x – 12y – 4 = 0 Answer: a: ; b: ; c: -

V. ASSIGNMENT
Read and copy the following questions and answer what is asked. Write your answer in
one whole sheet of paper.
1. A group of mountain climbers begin an expedition with a 265 kg of food. They plan to
eat a total 15 kg of food per day. The equation r = 265 – 15d relates the remaining food supply r
to the number of days d.
a. Write the equation in slope – intercept form.
b. Identify the slope and y – intercept of the equation.
2. Write an equation of your own. Identify the slope and y – intercept. Your own equation
must be in slope-intercept form.
