the ray diagram of a
plane mirror and its
characteristic

Virtual image
1. From figure 5.3 ,it can be seen that image of the light
bulb appears to be behind the mirror.
2. If a screen is placed behind the plane mirror ,no
image is projected on the screen.
3. An image,which cannot be formed on a screen,is
called a virtual image.
4. A virtual image is produced at the place where the
reflected rays appear to intersect.

LATERAL INVERSION OF AN IMAGE

1. The women is brushing her hair with a brush in her
right hand in front of a plane mirror but she appears
to be using her left hand if you look at her image in
mirror.
2. This phenomena is called lateral inversion (a left –
right reversal)
3. However, the image is still upright (no top-bottom
vertical reversal).
4. Besides the orientation, the order of letter is also
reversed in a virtual image.A fire engine with the
word ‘ bomba’.The letters are placed in this way so
that drivers in front can see the letters in the right
order,i.e. ,’BOMBA’ and the correct orientation in
their rear-view mirrors.
1. Ray of light (a) and (b) from the point P of the object
are reflected by the plane mirror before entering the
observer’s eye.

2. The reflected rays, when extended backwards behind

the mirror appear to intersect at P’ which forms the
corresponding image of P. This happens to all the
points of the object and a complete virtual image is
then formed.

3. Characteristic of image in a plane mirror :

(a) The image is virtual .

(b) The image is upright and laterally inverted.
(c) The size of the image is the same as the object.
(d) The distance between image and mirror is the
same as distance between object and mirror.

THE RAY DIAGRAM

OF A CONVEX
MIRROR AND ITS
CHARACTERISTIC

CONVEX MIRROR
the reflecting surface is on the outside; the object and
the focus are on opposite sides of the mirror
(remember-the focus is on the "inside" of the circle);
the object is located on the outside

Characteristics of convex mirrors:

1. the The focal length is negative (because the
object and the focus are on opposite sides of the
mirror)
2. The object and the focus are on opposite sides of
the mirror (the focus is on the inside of the mirror
and the object is on the outside)
3. Only virtual images are formed; all images are
smaller than object
Ray Diagrams for convex mirrors:
1. A ray incident on the mirror that is parallel to the
principal axis is reflected in a line even with the
focus (extend the reflected ray behind the mirror
so that it passes through the focus)
2. A ray incident on the mirror that passes through
the focus is reflected parallel to the principal axis
(extend the reflected ray behind the mirror
parallel to the principal axis)

CONCAVE MIRRORS

the reflecting surface of the mirror is on the inside; the

object and focus are located on the same side of the mirror

Characteristics of concave mirrors:

1. The focal length is positive (because the object and the
focus are on the same side of the mirror)
2. The object and the focus are on the same side of the
mirror (inside the arc)
3. Real images can be formed by the mirror when the
object is outside of the focus; an inverted image is
formed
4. Virtual images are formed by the mirror when the
object is within the focus; an erect image is formed
5. No image is formed when the object is at the focus
6. When the object is at the center of curvature, an
inverted image is formed at the center of curvature

Ray diagrams for concave mirrors:

1. A ray incident upon the mirror that is parallel to the
principal axis, reflects through the focus
2. A ray incident upon the mirror that passes through the
focus, reflects parallel to the principal axis
