GearHost Web Hosting

GearHost is a cloud hosting service that specializes in .NET and PHP hosting. It allows developers to easily deploy web apps. The author tried GearHost because it offers a free tier plan that allows hosting 100 apps and databases with limited resources. Registration was simple, only requiring an email and password. The author deployed a simple ASP.NET MVC app successfully in just minutes by using the publish settings file from GearHost. While limited on the free tier, the author was satisfied with GearHost for individual ASP.NET development and may upgrade to a paid plan in the future.

About this paper

This narrates an initial impression of GearHost.Written after using it for about an hour. The use was to deploy a simple
Asp.net MVC app online. The app deployed was made during leisure time. As for the deployment was successful. Thedeployed
app can be viewed at http://numera.gear.host/.

What is Gear Host?

Gear Host is a Cloud Hosting service that specializes in .Net and PHP hosting. It makes it easy to deploy web apps online.
Gear host is recommended for individual developers or small business who want to put a site online quickly.Large enterprise are
better off elsewhere for hosting.

Why I tried Gear Host

Free tier plan
The first reason why is because it’s free. I can put a simple ASP.net app online for free. They claim to be able to host 100 apps
and database plans for free. of course the free plans have limited resource(Ram, bandwidth, storage and etc..). The price tiers
can be viewed on https://www.gearhost.com/pricing
Easy deployment for ASP.net
I looked at the site and noticed that they provided an easy way to deploy an ASP.net web app with Visual Studio. They
generated a publishsettings file that can be associated to the publish settings of my ASP.net project. To get the publishsettings
file, I registered to Gear Host. I then Registered an application with a name available (Numera in tis case), waited for site to
be available, went to the publish tab of the registered app and clicked ”Application Publishing Files”. All of those were done in
minutes.

Registering to Gear Host

The registration was simple. I Signed up with email address and password. Afterwards, wait for an email to the email address I
registered with and click on the Activation link. That’s it. I was able to have an activated account and I can use the free tier
plans for websites and databases. No credit card needed.

Conclusion
I liked Gear host. I plan to deploy simple more ASP.net apps(.net framework 4.5-4.6). there. I just need to keep in mind the
limited specs on the free tier plans. I am disappointed that .net Core is not currently supported. Hopefully, the add that in the
future. As an individual Asp.net dev, I am satisfied. I might used the paid plans at some point in the near future.
