Assignment Dielectrics

This document outlines problems for a tutorial and assignment on dielectrics. It includes 4 tutorial problems (T1-T3) to be discussed, and 4 assignment problems (A1-A4) to be submitted. The problems involve finding electric fields, potentials, and other quantities for various dielectric and charged configurations, including spheres, shells, slabs, and parallel plate capacitors with dielectrics. The assignment is due on January 30th, 2020 and is worth a total of 20 marks.

Tutorial + Assignment: 3

(Dielectrics)
Max Marks: 20 Due date : 30.01.2020 Dated: 20.01.2020
Problems T# are to be discussed during tutorial. Those marked with A# should
be submitted as assignment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T1. A sphere of homogeneous linear dielectric material is kept in an otherwise
uniform electric field ⃗E=E 0 z^ . Find the potential in the region outside the sphere
and calculate the field inside the dielectric regime.
T2. A free charge ‘+q’ is distributed uniformly on the inner surface of a dielectric
spherical shell with inner and outer radii as ‘a’ and ‘b’. Find D(r), E(r) and V(r) in the
regions: (i) r < a, (ii) a < r < b, and (iii) r > b.
T3. A point charge ‘+q’ is kept at the centre of a spherical shell of a dielectric with
1
dielectric constant ϵ (r )∝ , r being the distance from the centre. Find the volume
r
bound charge density inside the dielectric, and the potential inside and outside the
shell.
A1. Consider a dielectric, with dielectric constant ϵ r , filling all space and an
electric field ⃗E=E 0 z^ exists inside the dielectric. Now if a sphere of radius R is
removed from the dielectric, find the field inside and outside the spherical cavity.[5]
A2. A point dipole with dipole moment p is imbedded at the center of a sphere of
linear dielectric material (with radius R and dielectric constant ϵ r ). Find the
electric potential inside and outside the sphere. [5]
A3. The space between the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor is filled with two slabs
of linear dielectric material. Each slab has thickness a, so the total distance between
the plates is 2a. Slab 1 has a dielectric constant of 2, and slab 2 has a dielectric
constant of 1.5. The free charge density on the top plate is σ and on the bottom plate
7σ . Find the electric displacement D, el. field E and polarization P in each slab [5].
A4. A parallel plate capacitor with plate dimensions 4 cm x 4 cm, and plates
separated by a distance 1 cm is charged to acquire a potential difference of 5 volts.
Now a dielectric slab with dielectric constant of 2.0 and the dimensions of 4 cm x 4
cm is half inserted between the plates. What happens to the dielectric slab? Find the
force on the slab and deduce the capacitance as a function of time [5].
