Q1 Read the passage carefully.

Red Cross: How Hope Evolved

On June 24, 1859, Emperors Napoleon III and Franz Joseph I engaged in
the Battle of Solferino, commanding a combined total of about 270,000
troops onto the field for a single day of battle. Nearly 40,000 were either
dead, injured, or missing, many of whom were simply left to die on the
battlefield. Later, spectators crowded the fields, looking for loved ones,
searching for items they could sell, or simply taking in the horrors of the
battle .A Swiss businessman and social activist Jean Henri Dunant, who
was traveling in Solferino witnessed all this.

Jean Henri Dunantwitnessed the atrocities of war as well as the countries

not prepared or equipped to ease the suffering of those who had been
injured in the Battle of Solferino. Dunant organized a group of volunteers to
help bring water and food to the injured, to assist with medical treatment, or
write letters to the families of those who were dying and he urged the public
to create an organization which would assist the wounded, regardless of
which side they fought for during times of war. After that moment, he wrote
the book, A Memory of Solferino, which urged the public to create an
organization which would assist the wounded, regardless of which side
they fought for during times of war. His writing inspired countless others to
rally behind him in the creation of the International Federation of the Red
Cross.

The modern-day Red Cross began by devoting itself largely to disaster

relief and epidemic treatment. This effort continues to this day. One of the
easiest ways you can help the Red Cross is to make sure you are able to
donate blood and make an appointment at the Red Cross website. But,
donating blood isn't the only way you can help out—the Red Cross also
encourages donating your time if you can. This is what the Red Cross
wants everyone to know.

Q2 Read the passage carefully-

The Road to Success

1. The Road to success is not straight; there is a curve called failure, a loop
called confusion, speed bumps called friends, caution lights called family,
and you will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called
determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, and a
driver called God, you will make it to a place called success!
2. In spite of all our planning and preparation, unexpected challenges are
certain to arise. The bumps in the road are unavoidable, but you’ll never
get to your destination if you aren’t willing to drive over them. The
difference between a disaster and triumph lies in whether or not you’re
prepared and willing to weather the storm. If you’re ready, those bumps will
become stepping-stones.
3. The key thing to realize is that working harder is same as working
smarter. How do you work smarter? You just need to have the right skills.
People want improved circumstances and better life without an improved
self. They want victory without paying the price or making efforts. It really
cannot happen without the other. Any improvements that have not been
generated by improving yourself are superficial and short-lived. If you want
to have a better future, you have to change yourself. Stop worrying about
the various challenges that will come your way. Just believe in yourself and
use them as stepping-stones.

4. “Success” is getting whatever you want out of life without violating the
rights of others.” It is not an accident. Success is the result of our
attitude and our attitude is a choice. Hence success is a matter of choice
and not chance.
5. Today success represents a holistic and positive attitude to life. Attitude
is everything. Success is not restricted within some kind of brick and mortar
premises. It assumes the individuality of a complete act executed with
perfection; material achievements do not define life. We don’t remember
sports stars for the products they endorse but the spirit of achievement
they represent. In the abundance of positive attitude underline the grandeur
of a truly rewarding rich life.
6. Success can be measured from two standpoints—the external and the
internal. Externally it is the measure of a job well done and recognition.
Internally it the feeling of achievement and wholeness derived from the
completion of a task or fulfillment of desire.

2.1 On the basis of your reading of the above extract, answer the following 2x4=8
questions in 30-40 words each:

(a) What qualities lead one to the place called success?

(b) What is the difference between disaster and triumph?
(c) How can one have a better future?

SECTION :A (READING)
1. Read the passage given below and complete the statements that follow: 8
(1) Tourists to Jammu and Kashmir have another attraction – a floating post office on the Dal Lake in
Srinagar, the first in the country. ‘Floating Post Office, Dal Lake’ – claimed to be the only one such post
office in the world – is built on an intricately carved maroon houseboat, fastened on the western edge
of the Dal Lake.

(2) This post office lets you avail of all the regular postal services available in the country while being
afloat. The seal used on everything posted from Floating Post Office is unique – along with the date
and address, it bears the design of a boatman rowing a shikara on the Dal Lake. The special feature of
this post office is that letters posted from here carry a special design which has the picturesque
scenery of Dal Lake and Srinagar city. These pictures reach wherever these letters are posted to and
hence promote Kashmir as a tourist destination across the world.

(3) This is actually a heritage post office that has existed since British times. It was called Nehru Park Post
Office before 2011. But then the chief postmaster John Samuel renamed it as ‘Floating Post Office’.

month in Floating Post Office by communities living in and around the Dal Lake. The lake has several
islets that are home to more than 50,000 people.

(6) The greatest fear is the recurrence of 2014 like floods in which the houseboat had gone for a toss
uncontrollably pushed by the flood. Rescue teams had to anchor it using special mechanism in a
nearby highland. Then it was brought back on the Dal after the water receded. The biggest boon is
that at no time of the year do you need a fan in this post-office !

SECTION :A (READING)
1. Read the passage given below and complete the statements that follow: 8
The First sign of Hope

Christy Brown was one of the thirteen children of a Dublin couple. He was born with cerebral palsy. He
could not control his cropped body and was thought to be mentally defective. Until he was five years old,
he showed no sign of being able to communicate. He was quite unable to speak in spite of his mother’s
efforts to help him. He remembers his first step that enabled him to become a famous writer.

One snowy December day, when he was five, Christy saw one of his sisters writing with a chalk on a slate.
Attracted by the color of the chalk, Christy picked up a piece of it with his left foot. His surprised family
watched him silently, and then his mother came over to him.

Taking another piece of chalk from Mona, she hesitated, and then very deliberately drew, on the floor in
front of me , the single letter ‘A’.

‘Copy that’ she said, looking steadily at me. ‘Copy it, Christy’. I couldn’t.

I looked about me, looked around at the faces that were turned towards me, tense, excited faces that
were at the moment frozen, immobile, eagerly waiting for a miracle in their midst.

The stillness was profound. The room was full of flame and shadow that danced before my eyes and lulled
my taut nerves into a sort of waking sleep. I could hear the sound of the water tap dripping in the pantry,
the loud ticking of the clock on the mantel shelf, and the soft hiss and crackle of the logs on the open
hearth.

I tried again. Put out my foot and made a wild jerking stab with chalk which produced a very crooked line
and nothing more. Mother held the slate ready for me. ‘TRY AGAIN, Chris’, she whispered in my ear .
‘Again.’

I did. I stiffened my body and put my left foot out again for the third time, drew one side of the letter. I
drew half the other side. Then the stick of chalk broke and I was left with a stump. I wanted to fling it away
and give it up. Then I felt my mother’s hand on my shoulder. I tried once more. Out went my foot. I shook;
I sweated and strained every muscle. My hands were so tightly clenched that my finger nails bit into the
flesh. I set my teeth so hard that I nearly pierced my lower lip. Everything in the room swam till the faces
around me were mere patches of white. But—I drew it –the Letter A. There it was on the floor before me.
Shaky with awkward wobbly sides and a very uneven centre line, but it was the letter A. I looked up. I saw

www.tiwariacademy.com
my mother’s face for a moment, tears on her cheeks. Then my father stooped and hoisted me on to his
shoulder.

I had done it. It had started – the thing that was to give my mind its chances of expressing itself. True, I
couldn’t speak with my lips. But now I would speak through something more lasting than spoken words -
written words.

to transform the society. He strongly protested against polygamy and child marriage. He favoured

widow remarriage and women’s education in India. The Widow Remarriage Act was passed in
1856 making the marriage of widows legal because of his efforts to solve these problems
2. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar refined the way the Bengali language was written and taught. His book

qualities. He was also known for his great courage. Vidyasagar had a very soft heart that
sympathised with those in trouble. He was easily moved to tears when he saw someone in pain
