1. How does a fee-for-service model affect individual patients?

How does it affect

the US health care system as a whole? (Institute for Healthcare
Improvement, 2020). A fee-for-service model affects individual patients by the
repeated healthcare that they have to receive, simply because they are not getting
the underlying problems treated correctly. This affects the US healthcare system as
a whole by the greater amount of patients they have coming in, multiple times. This
keeps the healthcare system making money.
2. What are some preventative measures that could have helped improve the
quality of life for Yvonne Osborn and Roy Litton?(Institute for Healthcare
Improvement, 2020). Some preventative measures that could have been done is
teaching on the importance of lifestyle, such as healthy diet, exercise, and avoiding
smoking. Receiving teaching on a new diagnosis, such as diabetes with Yvonne
Osborn, could have helped prevent the heart problems she was having, simply by
controlling her diabetes better with exercise and a special diet.
3. Can you recall an example of a patient experiencing an adverse health event
that could have been prevented with more coordinated care?(Institute for
Healthcare Improvement, 2020). Yes. I remember quite a few patients that I have
helped take care of that could have avoided certain hospitalizations if they had
received education on their disease process. I think diabetes is one of the major
problems with this, since so many people have diabetes, and most patient are
unable to explain ways to help control their diabetes.
4. If you had the ability to create a health care system from scratch, what would
you do differently? For example, how would you address the 20 percent of
patients who account for 80 percent of the cost? I would make sure that these
patients were being educated better. When patients come to the hospital, and we
give them new medications, and then they are sent home, they were only really
being treated for their disease while they were in the hospital. In order to make sure
they are still being treated for their disease at home, they need to be educated on
lifestyle changes that need to be made, in order to avoid constant hospitalizations. I
would make sure that doctors and nurses were getting paid for the quality of they
care they are providing, not the amount of care that they give (Institute for
Healthcare Improvement, 2020).
