4 RADIAL NOZZLE IN CYLINDRICAL SHELL DIV 1

4.5.1 Example E4.5.1 - Radial Nozzle in Cylindrical Shell

4.5.1 Example E4.5.1 - Radial Nozzle in Cylindrical Shell

Design an integral nozzle in a cylindrical shell based on the vessel and nozzle data below. The parameter
used in this design procedure are shown in Figure E4.5.1

Vessel and Nozzle Data:

● Design Conditions = 1355 psig@300°F
● Corrosion Allowance = 0.125 in
● Weld Joint Efficency = 1.0
● Shell Material = SA-516-70N 2007
● Shell Allowable Stress = 20000 psi
● Yeild strenght = 34800 psi
● Nozzle Material = SA-105N
● Nozzle Allowable Stress = 20000 psi
● Cylinder Insde Diameter = 45 in
● Cylinder Thickness = 1.75 in
● Nozzle Outside Diameter = 3.308 in
● Nozzle Thickness = 0.654 in
● External Nozzle Projection = 6 in
● Interanl Nozzle Projection = 0.5 in
● d = 4.035 in
● Solid plate opening (E1) = 1.0
● Thickness of cylinder(t) = 1.625 in
● Required thickness of cylinder(tr) = 1.589 in
● Nozzle neck thickness(tn) = 0.529 in
● Required thickness of nozzle neck(trn) = 0.0795 in
● Nominal thickness of inside projection(ti) = 0.404 in
● Corrcetive factor (F) = 1
● fr2, fr1 = 1

The nozzle is inserted through shell, i.e, set-in type nozzle.

Section VIII, Division 1 Solution

Evalute per UG-37.
The required thickness of the shell based on circumferetial stress is given by UG-27©(1).

tr = PR = 1355(22.5) = 1.5890
SE-0.6p 20000(1.0)-0.6(1355)

c) STEP3- Calculte the Area of Reinfocement see Fig. UG-37.1 (with Reinforcing Element
per Fig UG-40(e-1)).
1) Area Required A:
A=dtrF+2tntrF(1-fr1)
A=2.25(1.5890)(1.0)+2(0.529)(1.5988)(1.0)(1-1.0) = 3.575

Note: The thickness of the reinforcing pad, tr , exceeds the outside vertical reinfocement
zone limit. Therefore, the reinforcement area in the pad is limited to within the zone.

A1 = d(E1t-Ftr)-2tn(E1t-Ftr)(1-fr1)
= 0.14526 0.0381
= 0.107

A2 = 5(tn-trn)fr2t 5(tn-trn)fr2tn 2.5t 2.5tn+te

= 3.6521875 1.189 4.0625 1.6975

A3 = 5t*ti*fr2 5*ti*ti*fr2 2*h*ti*fr2

3.2825 0.81608 0.404

A41 = (leg)²fr3
= 0.4225

A42 = (leg)²fr4
= 0.140625

A43 = (leg)²fr2
= 0.140625

A5 = (Dp-d-2tn)te fr4
= 1.108

TOTAL ARE= A1+A2+A3+(A41+A42+A43)+A5

= 3.512

7) Total Available Area, Aavail:

Aavail =A1+A2+A3+(A41+A42+A43)+A5
Aavail= 0.107+1.189+0.404+0.4225+0.1406+0.1406+1.108 = 3.512
FROM PV ELITE CALCULTION

AS PER PV ELITE CALCULTION REQUIRED THICKNESS : 1.5984 INCH

AS PER PTB-4 EXAMPLE CALCULTION REQUIRED THICKNESS : 1.5890
% ERROR=((1.5984-1.5890)/1.5890*100 = %<2%
AS PER PV ELITE CALCULTION REQUIRED AREA : 3.596 INCH²
AS PER PTB-4 EXAMPLE CALCULATION REQUIRED THICKNESS : 3.575 INCH²
% ERROR =((3.596-3.575)/3.575)*100 = 0.59 %<2%

SO THE SOFTWARE OUPUT IS ACCEPTABLE
