Revenge

It is a poya1 day morning. She can see there is no holiday for a husband, who a high ranked
government official, even on poya day. He is getting ready to leaves the home to attend a
meeting which is unavoidable. It will be dark when he returns. When the lunch which prepared
for him was given to his hands he left the home after landing a kiss on her face as usual. The
small son of about four years in age, who does not know any of these, turning channels of TV
rather than watching the TV.

When she overheard “Damma Sawana kalo iyan Padamtha” 2 her desire to listen the sermon
aroused. “Son put that, listen to the sermon at least today on poya day, without watching
nonsense” But she really didn’t understand whether that command is actually for her or to her
little son.

After usual “aradana gatha”3 she heard only the last two line of topic stanza.

Attapi athano natti

Kutho putho kutho dannm4

Since the bikkhu5 stared his sermon after the Stanza as “My dear all meritorious people, today on
this poya day morning” she stood as her backwards towards the TV screen while listening to it
with a feeling less face to find out what her son is doing at the moment.

Again her ears ran to sermon. She felt a some sort of a familiarity in bikkus voice. She looked at
the TV screen thinking who had that familiar voice. While looking at the picture of bikku on the
screen she felt a familiarity in the picture of the bikku too. “Who is this? Not a bikku that does
sermon more frequently seems to be a new one. But does the sermon well”

Again she felt the familiarity of the voice more deeply. This made her make a thorough look at
bikku on the screen. She felt the familiarity of the picture also in much more deeper manner than
before.

Her mind ran into past to find out whether this face is among the face of her memory book.

“Cannot remember, but a very familiar face” She muttered because her first attempt to remember
the face was failed. She started diving in pages of her memory book again. This time she came
across a picture which is closer to it. That was her ex- university boy friend.

“Is this him” she got shaken. In her mind she imagined some hair on his head, dressed him in a
pair of denims and a T-shirt while looking at the bikkhu on the screen. Yes! It is him. There is no
doubt now at all. It is him.
“Why he got ordained” she thought. With that thought all past incidents came floating into her
mind. Mind retrieved back the way they fall in love, the journeys they went together, how they
enjoyed their love in dark corners under the bushes.

“Is that because me he got ordained?” she thought. “No, Cannot be” she gave an answer to
herself to console the mind. The she heard someone was shouting from the bottom of her heart
“Don’t try to lie, he ordained because of you”

“No, he is traitor” she argued.

“When we do an evil deed it follows us my dear people” it is from the television. It seems to be
the bikkhu on the screen invectiving her”

The day they got departed flashed back in her mind. She remembered the way he looked at her
when she declared him that she is leaving. Eyes were red. She tried to understand the feelings of
that face.

“I don’t know, I didn’t understand this person that day, not even today. Like a difficult sum of
chemistry”

She looked at the bikkhu on the screen. The serenity of the figure astonished her. When she
looked more observantly to figure she saw as it teasing her”

“Rascal has returned back in robe to take revenge from the TV”

She lost her temper. The calmness of the bikkhu figure seems to be making her angry more and
more”

“What a nuisance” she switched off the TV.

The little son came running to mother asking “Why you switched off-the TV amma” 6

“Amma is crying” he exclaimed looking at her mother surprisingly.

“You mind your own business” she became rude to him and chased him away while muttering to
herself “I am wrong my dear little son”
