Project#1

The document provides instructions for a project to determine the maximum power of electronic components that can be mounted in a horizontal duct using heat transfer calculations and SolidWorks simulation. The duct is 1.5m long with a 20cm x 20cm cross section, and is cooled by 30°C air flowing at 200m/min, with the duct surface not exceeding 65°C. Students are asked to calculate the maximum power using equations, confirm it using SolidWorks, and provide a temperature plot from the simulation.

MECH 4430: Project 1 Due: 1/30/2020

The components of an electronic system are located in a 1.5m long horizontal duct whose cross
section is 20cm x 20cm. The electronic components are cooled by flowing air over the duct at
30°C and 200m/min. The outside surface temperature of the duct cannot exceed 65°C.

a. Determine the total power of the electric components that can be mounted into the duct
using the methods found in chapter 7 of the heat transfer text.
b. Also confirm your answer using SolidWorks Flow Simulation. Hint: Surface Goals can
be used to report the heat transfer from a surface.
c. Provide a cut plot that shows the temperature of the flow field.
