Chapter 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The automotive industry is characterized by a relatively low trade/sales

ratio. While the production of most automotive producers in the world is spread

over various countries in the value chain, the brands are still considered to reflect

some national identity on global perspective

Arquillos and Romero (2016) said that "burns and superficial wounds, and

more likely to suffer dislocations or sprains" so it means this kind of accidents is

one of the common accidents that usually happen in automotive repair shops.

In Asia, burns, cuts, superficial wounds, and exposure to harmful

substances are also one of the usual accidents that happen in automotive repair

shops. In the Philippines researchers are thinking about the common accidents

that usually happen in automotive repair shops then they will know if contacts

with harmful substances are one of the mistakes that usually happen in

automotive repair shops.

Hardison (2013) said "falling, being struck by objects falling on them,

touching engine parts that burn them or other injuries that commonly result from

working around power tools, equipment and machinery.” Thus, there are many

kinds of accidents that happen in automotive repair shops.

Purpose and Description

This Research intends to know what are the accidents that usually happen

in automotive repair shops and also to know how to avoid accidents that maybe

can happen in the workers, students of automotive servicing and also to the

instructor or teachers of auto mechanic students and what are the best way on

how to secure the safety of an auto mechanic.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aim to find out what are the occupational hazards and

accidents that usually happen in typical automotive repair shops in Barangay San

Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal?

Specifically, the researchers intend to determine the answers to the

following:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Years as Automotive Service/Repairman

4
SOUTHVILLE 8B SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

TVL – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING NC I

d. Educational Attainment

2. What are the hazards that an automotive service/repairman is exposed to

as well accidents in the duration of his employment?

3. What are the preventive measures being implemented to lessen hazards

and avoid future accidents?

4. What are the benefits an automotive repair/serviceman may receive in the

event of exposure to hazards or accidents?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the respondents

and their exposure to hazards and accidents?

Research Hypothesis

The hypothesis is declared in the null form; therefore, there is no

significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their exposure

to hazards and accidents.

Scope and Limitations

This research covers only the automotive service/repairmen who works in

the various automotive repair shops in Barangay San Isidro in Rodriguez, Rizal.

This research aims to determine only the hazards presents in the shops as well

accidents that usually happens there.

5

The research does not aim to discover the monetary amount given to

those who experienced accidents.

Importance of the Study

This research would show its significance to the following:

for the automotive industry for them to know what are the best ways on

how to secure the conditions of the workers and to what are what they need to

make a law for the good of the worker so they can avoid it from any kind of

accident. It is important to our safety management plan. It helps to create

awareness of hazards and risk, to prevent an accidents and sickness absence,

it’s important to identify monitor and reduce the risk associated with workplace

hazards;

for Southville 8B Senior High School to be familiar terms with on how to

secure their students, and also it helps to prepare of accidents that maybe can

happen in their school for the safety of their students;

for the Teachers and Trainers for them to know how to secure their

students on what they need to wear when inside the automotive shops or

laboratory;

for automotive servicing students to make them aware on how to

prevent dangers from happening in school and thus promote a physically safe

environment and concentrate on learning without worries about risks and

6

mistakes because concerns about physical safety can distract students, cause

them emotional distress and take up mental energy;

for Automotive Service/Repairmen so that they become aware of

hazards that are potentially dangerous such substances and even behavior that

may cause harm or injury; and

for the researchers for them to know what are the accidents that happen

in automotive repair shops and to inform others of what they need to know when

they are inside the automotive repair shops.

Definition of Terms

Accident. An accident is an unplanned, unforeseen and unexpected

event that has a negative impact on all activities of the individual(s) concerned.

An accident can result in death, injury, health hazard, loss of property, damage to

environment or a combination thereof. Accidents can lead to loss of life and

properties, increase in treatment and compensation costs, loss of production,

time and morale, and a negative impact on good of the organization, society,

family or any other persons concerned.

Physical Hazards. Are the most common hazards and are present in

most work places of sometime.

Environmental hazards. These are substances, states or events which

have the potential to threaten the surrounding Natural Environment/or adversely

affect people’s health, including pollution and natural disaster such as Storms

and Earthquake.

Hazardous Substance. Is any substance that has one or more of the

following intrinsic “hazardous” properties – explosiveness or flammability to

oxidize (accelerate a fire) and human toxicity whether acute or chronic.

Biological Hazards. Also known as biohazards, refers to biological

substances that pose threat to the health of living organism.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

This chapter contains discussions related to and similar to studies and

literature that aims to provide explanations and knowledge of research problems.

According to Hoffman (2015)," Mechanics often fall prey to accidents at

the workplace due to equipment tip-over, falls, or collapse, and suffer sudden

injuries, such as, cuts and burns." According to the text the injuries that usually

happen was cuts and burns so we need to use personal protective equipment to

avoid accidents like cuts and burns because skin burners have a great impact on

the workers because they may have an impact on their work so they need to use

personal protective equipment and wear proper clothing if they are in the auto

shops to avoid accidental occurrence.

According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017)," injury and

illness report, automotive mechanics and technicians experienced 13,150

nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses resulting in valuable time away from

work." according to the texts many workers are suffered on their works

mechanics and technicians experienced 13,150 non fatal occupational injuries

9
SOUTHVILLE 8B SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

TVL – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING NC I

and illnesses resulting in valuable time away from work so it means there are

many accidents that should happen in auto repair shops and may it would affect

on their physical health and maybe it can cause death.

According to Smith (2007),“mechanics are more likely than the average

worker to be injured or killed on the job, as evidenced by higher rates of fatalities

and injuries and illnesses." based on the text many auto mechanic men that

suffer in their job because being an auto mechanic may involve accidentally

possible if necessary to be careful about what to do if repairing a vehicle or

handling harmful substances to prevent accidents that can even be killed if this

happens and also the researchers will suggest that used personal protective

equipment to prone or avoid accidents that may happen.

According to Hunt (2014)," The most commonly cited workplace hazards

involved in accidents/illness were manual handling, sitting for long periods and

the handling of harmful substances." based on the text handling in harmful

substance is one of the accidents that usually happen in auto shops and be

careful of all the work to prevent accidental occurrence so we suggest that use

gloves to avoid accidents like handling in harmful substances

According to Meza (2018)," Even for workers who don’t focus exclusively

on driving, such as construction or agricultural jobs where driving a truck is only

part of the job, transportation-related incidents are the most dangerous." based

10
SOUTHVILLE 8B SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

TVL – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING NC I

on the text if you don't focusing in your job like driving maybe it can cause

accidents and that will affect on your Physical health and it can also cause death

Arquillos and Romero (2016) said that" burns and superficial wounds, and

more likely to suffer dislocations or sprains" so it means this kind of accidents is

one of the common accidents that usually happen in automotive repair shop so

that all workers need knowledge of what to do and should have proper clothing

before handling or repairing a vehicle to prevent accidents

Synthesis

Automotive servicing difficulties that appears on that those related

literature and studies will synthesized the data that related on the research

entitled “work related accidents that usually happen in automotive shops

automotive servicing” This data was gathered as a facts on research that related

on the topic. Like what Hoffman (2015) said “most accidents that happen in auto

shops are cuts and burns” as now A days many auto mechanic suffer on their job

because in their job has a usual accidents that may happen like cuts and burns

like what we've suggest that use personal protective equipment to prone harmful

accidents and also what Hardison (2013) said “falling, being struck by objects

falling on them, touching engine parts that burn them or other injuries that

commonly result from working around power tools, equipment and machinery.”

on the text said that falling object, touching engine parts and etc is the accidents

11

TVL – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING NC I

that happen in auto shops we suggest that use proper attire when you're inside at

work area also smith said that " mechanics are more likely than the average

worker to be injured or killed on the job, as evidenced by higher rates of fatalities

and injuries and illnesses." so there it can be possible that some of the auto

mechanic suffered accidents like Injured or sometimes may can cause death

therefore Hunt said (2014)," The most commonly cited workplace hazards

involved in accidents/illness were manual handling, sitting for long periods and

the handling of harmful substances." there are many harmful substances that

may will affect on our physical appearance on your choosing job but we suggest

used proper attire in the inside of the work place or what we called personal

protective equipment
