Chapter 1 Sip 1

This document is a science investigatory project conducted by students from Advance Institute of Technology investigating the use of Citrofortunella Microcarpa (calamansi) extract and bicarbonate soda as a natural disinfectant. The study aims to prove the efficacy of calamansi extract and baking soda in cleaning household items like toilet bowls and tiles. It discusses the properties of calamansi extract and how it can kill bacteria when mixed with baking soda. The study also seeks to determine the effectiveness of this homemade remedy compared to commercial disinfectants and whether it can cause skin irritation.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

We are facing major household problems nowadays and everybody wants to clean their homes

without any trouble in the way. But no matter how hard we try to protect our houses, still we

cannot stop dirt and stains from dilating. This is the reason why most of the people use

synthetic disinfectants to remove stains on their house facilities. A stain is a discoloration that

can be clearly separated from the surface it is found upon. There are a lot of disinfectant
products that are out there in the markets. They are all showcased to remove stains directly

and quickly.

We have decided to conduct an investigatory project as a way to make natural alternatives to

disinfectant to make life easy. This interests us the most because we have observed that not all

disinfectant products are that a hundred percent sure to remove stains, plus, it is not really

natural but synthetic. We wanted to be more environment-friendly to minimize chemical

pollution through a homemade and natural cleaning product.

Theoretical Background

You don’t have to think for what kind of disinfectant to use in your houses. Just the baking soda

and calamansi, it will do a fabulous job of disinfecting or removing stains in different aspects.

Nowadays, disinfectants that were sold in the market were harmful to our health and has a very

strong chemicals that can cause damage to your skin and can also add other irritation especially

if you have a sensitive skin. Putting these two together will have a fizzy reaction that is very

helpful when it comes to dirt build up. This study of our group suggests that baking soda and

calamansi extract are a good replacement for a synthetic disinfectant in our houses. Baking

soda or sodium bicarbonate is known to be a great alkalizing agent together with the calamansi
extract since it has many antiseptic properties along with being an amazing exfoliator and

especially they are affordable and non-toxic.

This study focuses on how to achieve a hygienic and germ free environment through this

inexpensive products that gives a great result when applied.

Review of Related Literature

The researchers are creating a more effective disinfectant with ingredients that are usually

found locally. Calamansi is an example of this local ingredient that is needed for disinfectant.

Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa orCitrofortunella mitis) is an important Citrofortunella,

meaning that the Calamondin is an intergenetic hybrid between a member of the genus citrus

(in this case probably the mandarin orange) and the kumquat belong to Fortunella. Calamondin

(Citrofortunella microcarpa)

is a shrub or small tree growing to 3-6 meters (9.8-19.7 ft.). The plant is characterized by wing-

like appendages on the leaf stalks and white or purplish flowers. The fruit of the calamander

resembles small, round lime, usually 25-35 mm in diameter, but sometimes up to 45mm.The

center pulp and juice is the orange color of a tangerine with a very thin orange peel when ripe.

Each fruit contains 8 to 12 seeds. (Potonia,2014)

Calamansi extract is composed of ascorbic acid, phosphorus and calcium - the extract is derived

from a fruit tree that is native to the Philippines. Its fruit has either a spongy or leathery rind

with a juicy pulp that is divided into sections. The fruit is indigenous and widely cultivated in the

Philippines, Malaysia and neighboring northern parts of Indonesia. It is available year-round in

the Philippines and is usually seen in its ripened green state. The main objective of the study

entitled “Study of thee Antimicrobial activity of lemon ”( Citrus Lemon ) peel extract conducted

by Maruti J. Deuanavade, Chidamber B. Jalicute, Kalash D. Sonawane. Jai S. Ghosh, is

extraction, identification of antimicrobial compounds and demonstration of antimicrobial

activity of lemon ( Citrus Lemon l. ) peel against bacteria.

Calamansi extract and baking soda is a new natural way to disinfect toilet bowls and bathroom

tiles, thus, ensuring non-toxic and affordable product. Nowadays, we need to take a careful act

to minimize the pollution and toxics in our environment so we tried to provide an alternative

way for disinfecting by not using harmful chemicals.

We have been inspired by the natural disinfecting remedy for household stains and dirt using

lemon and baking soda. Some suggested to use it with vinegar to make a cleaning paste that

can remove dirt and stains from sink, toilet, bath tubs, etc. This previous research was already

proven to be naturally effective as a disinfectant given lemon’s natural bleaching qualities and

baking soda as one of the most versatile cleaners. We have thought to use other citrus fruits

with the same antiseptic properties such as the citrofortunella microcarpa also known as the

Philippine lime. We can use its extract together with baking soda to effectively clean our house.
The previous researches that inspired us to have this research helped us a lot in a way that we

have thought to improve the study using alternative variable which is prominent in our country,

Philippines. We have become innovative in our own ways because of these researches. It gave

us the idea to create an alternative to what has been done as an alternative to a synthetic

product.

Statement of the Problem

This study wants to prove the efficacy of calamansi extract and baking soda as a homemade remedy in

cleaning household like toilet bowls and tiles.

1. What properties of calamansi extract mixed with baking soda that can act to kill bacteria in stains?

2. How effective the calamansi extract and baking soda compared to the commercialized one?

3. Can this calamansi extract mixed with baking soda cause irritation to certain types of skin?
